MARCH 31. 1977 e q7n r arc JL THE LEAGUE is delighted to announce that special guest speaker will be Dr. Lennox Tierney, Professor in Art History at the University of Utah, whose emphasis is in Oriental subjects: the art of India, China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. Dr. Tierney will speak on Ikebana, the art of Japanese and flower arranging, Japanese gardens. Dr. Tierney is considered a foremost authority on these subjects and holds a degree from Japan in Ikebana from the Sogetsu School in Tokyo, which is equivalent to a Ph.D. in Western education. IN JAPAN, degrees are a family name. The first person to hold the degree establishes an academic family, which then becomes permanent throughout history. Dr. Tierney holds a Sevain 1 degree. The one after the degree indicates he is the first holder of that particular degree and has the right to confer the degree upon a student to whom he has taught everything he learned to obtain the degree. The person upon whom he bestows the degree will then hold the degree of Sevain II.
