While not fighting fires, the paid employees maintain the equipment, paint hydrants, and make inspections of taverns, day care centers, and other places of public occupancy. One of Chief Adams goals is to begin inspecting ail commercial buildings. ALL OF the volunteers have so that the siren doesnt have to be rung for each fire. According to the paging devices Chief, the expense for the pagers was covered in a very short time. When the siren was used, often fnany volun-- ' teers showed up when just 4 or 5 were needed. Each was paid $4 per hour, sometimes causing unnecessary payments. Now, all calls are dispatched through the police department. Each of the three companies is on call for a month at a time, the others available when needed. Of the 36 men, five are professional firefighters. RECOGNIZING that continual training is essential, Chief Adams requires all men attend Thursday night sessions which are two hours long in the summer and one hour in the winter. The siren is rung so that men are reminded and fines are assessed for those who are late. Some of the training includes the pump operations, rescue work and simulated fire calls. John Adams is shown by the Newest fire engine, a Chief NEW ENGINE 1975 in the design was a 4 story tower which is used to practice repelling (coming down on the outside of a building), rescue work, and ladder use. Found on the inside of the tower is an apparatus which is used for drying hoses. Classroom facilities are in now just lacks manpower. All of the paid employees have been hired within the past two years and he sees a need to the unfinished basement as well as recreational equipment that the firemen hav furnished. Outside in the back of the building is a drafting pit which measures 10 ft. x 20 ft. with an apparent depth of 2 1.3 paid fireman per 1000 population. Chief Adams pointed out that the national standard is TRUE to the tradition, Laytons trucks are kept polished at all times. n his year or at least every two Although the older equipment is not used often it is on call and ready to go at any time. Utah is far behind other states in that respect, he said that the city is fortunate that The newest truck is a 1975 model 1500 gallon per minute pumper, with a 500 gallon tank. It and the 70 model, 1250 gallon per minute pumper are both diesel powered. The other large truck is a 60 model with a 1000 gallon per minute pumping capacity. The balance of the equipment is used for drills and fighting grass and brush fires, including a 1942 truck that was given to Layton new when the government built Verdeland Park. nUlsTIIMll D If I M P ADDADATIIC ArrAnA I U5 This strange looking thing is used to dry is" hoses after they have been cleanednotice the inside the training tower; ladder on the left. - ft. IF anyone misses too many sessions, he is dropped and a replacement selected from a waiting list by a five man committee. Although the volunteers must adhere to some stringent regulations, membership does provide some social functions which help to promote unity. Steakfrys at Pineview, Christmas parties, and other functions bring the group together. The Ladies Auxiliary, which is composed of wives, is active in the State Firemans Association and two members are past presidents of the state group. THE physical plant of the fire department was designed with training needs and the future in minds. Incorporated HOWEVER, it is recessed more feet into the ground, holds approximately 30,000 gallons of water and is used for practice pump operation. The whole parking lot in the back where a hydrant was installed is used for drills. 14 Back inside the building, space has been allocated for future use for dormitories and a dispatch room. Currently, firemen use the police channel but, when on a large fire and a lot of communication is necessary they switch to the fire departments channel.
