Parents must know they can be great teachers in the home, for home is where the heart is. We must care and share our responsiAs in shocking High School, we all ask why. There are hundreds of unanswerable answers. I am sure there are a lot of reasons why our .youth play Russian roulette with their lives and the lives of others. ' We as parents, when we bring children into this world, are responsible for what they do with their lives. We should be our CHILDRENS best friends. Take inventory of what they are doing at home, school and other activities. We cant be in our CHILDRENS footsteps 24 hours-a-dathey must make their own paths, but we can help them with a trace of understanding. Let them know that our life maps have some special short cuts, some are wrong, some are right. We as parents must set an example for them in our society. I know our school teachers have With GMiHlMi Merrill Ogden have a friend who often repeats 'what he must have heard on "Perry Mason" or "Matlock". At times when an opinion is expressed hell say, "The facts are not in evidence to support your conclusion." I have thought about that statement relative to the magic show. If I had all the facts, I would understand what I was seeing. The mystery would be I Magic or mystery Over the weekend, I found myself in Las Vegas. (I am constantly attempting to find myself and every once in a while I find myself in Las Vegas.) As part of a birthday celebration for a friend, a group of us met in "Lost Wages, Nevada". The hope was that by getting together and parting ways with some of our hard-earn- ed cash, wed be entertained and create some memo- ries. When 1 "found myself", I was sitting in the Lance Burton Theater in the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino. Lance Burton, in case you didnt know, is a "master magician". Evidently hes been on television and was the first American to win a prestigious magic competition in Europe several years ago. He said that-hel- l be on the "Later" show on NBC Thursday night. (Thats the late, late, late show.) The theater is plush and new, and its big. I wish Snow College had a facility as nice d and about the size of this place. Of course if Snow Colleges productions were drawing hundreds of people at $34.95 and $39.95 per seat six nights a week, well, you can do the math. (And, by the way, that price is not considered in the expensive range as shows go in Vegas nowadays.) The magic show was spectacular and baffling! How he got six beautiful women out of one-thir- a suitcase was a mystery to me. How he took a kid from the audience and put him in a Corvette and made them both disappear was mind boggling. I was amazed. Yet throughout the show, I reminded myself that there Was a logical explanation for all the "magic". Obviously, theres more to it than meets the eye. After one trick, a guy from the audience, yelled "How did you do that?" Lance called back, "I could tell you, but then Id have to kill you." The guy answers, "You can kill my wife." Lance fired back, "Thank you for attending the performance tonight, Mr. President. " . . gone. In Lance Burtons show, the apparent evidence of one trick persuades the audience to assume that a lady is "floating in the air" without any means of support. It was an impressive illusion. The correct assumption should be that the lady was levitating without any visible means of support. Research would be required to find out how that trick was done. Ill now attempt to make a brief point, which may seem like a "stretch". We as citizens need to do some research and fact gathering before risking false assumptions. There are many times that we Sanpeters, as casual observers, notice situations which exist around us. We see decisions which are made by leaders in our communities or in our churches. We sometimes see the final proposal or product without seeing the evolution, the work or the logic behind all the information. The truth is that in many cases, theres more to it than meets the eye, just like magic. So, if at first glance, we find that we are immediately possessed of a strong opinion (opposed, or in favor), relative to a proposal or ordinance, a regulation, or a situation, we should ask ourselves the questions: "Do I have the facts? Is there more to this than meets the eye? Where is the logic? How can I better understand the reasons people have for their opinions? I believe that if we take this approach, well have a more productive problem solving society in Sanpete. And by the way, if you want to have a good time at a Vegas show, squirrel away a few bucks and go visit the Lance Burton Theater. Youll create a magical memory.... Merrill MT.
