Show Page Four - The Pyramid - September 16. 1998 NS sophomore team crushes Manti, 34 to 6 Falcons overcome Hawks, by Doug Johnson Canyon Views Jonny Gayson booted a field goal as time expired to lift the Falcons to a 23 to 20 win over the North Sanpete Hawks last Friday evening. The win kept number four ranked Canyon View undefeated, and dropped North Sanpete to one and two on the season. This was an exciting, game that was in doubt from the opening kick off. In every area but the score-boarNorth Sanpete outplayed Canyon View. But seven runs by the Falcons of more than 20 yards proved to be the factor that kept the Cedar City school in the game. Those seven long runs, three each in the first and last quarters, accounted for 261 of Canyon Views 350 yards rushing. Brett Johnson, again, had a fabulous game guiding North Sanpete at the quarterback position. Johnson, a junior, was ten of 16 passing for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Though he threw less than he did last week against Wasatch, Johnsons completions came at critical times showing him to be a big play quarterback. 20-ya- rd well-play- d, Of his ten completions, two went for touchdowns and seven for first downs. Senior, Garrett Olson, was a workhorse for the Hawks, gaining 130 yards on 28 carries, and catching two passes for 53 yards. North Sanpete got on the score-boar- d first, on a Johnson to third down TD Nelson Royal line. pass from the three-yar- d The score, on the Hawks first possession, came with 7:32 to go in the first quarter. A pass from Johnson to Olson from the 44 to the two set up the scoring strike. Chris Andersons kick made it 7 to 0. Canyon View moved the ball quickly after receiving the kick off. A run by Tony Torres, followed by an 1 keeper by quarterback Rand Janes, moved the ball deep into Hawk territory. North Sanpete caused a fumble, however, that Chris Anderson line. recovered on the The Falcon defense held and Sanpete was forced to punt from its own ten. On their second play from scrimmage, Janes went 37 yards on a keeper, and Canyon View had tied the score. After another Hawk punt, Janes broke off yet another long keeper, racing 64 yards to the Hawk one. Torres took it in from there, Falcons and the fourth-ranke- d had their first lead of the night, 14 to 7. North Sanpete then went on a sustained 12 play drive that straddled the end of the first quarter and start of the second. Olson did the majority of the work, carrying seven times for 58 yards. Containing five Hawk first downs, the drive culminated in a 29-ya- ten-ya- rd REWARD Lost in Ephraim Otis Springer Spaniel Small dog, mostly black socks with some white. The extra point by Anderson tied the score at 14 where it stayed through halftime. Defenses came to the forefront in the third period also, as neither team was able to put points on the board. But Hawk senior, Ben Pehrson, stepped up in the last three minutes of the third to position his team for a score. Taking a Falcon punt at his own 36, Pehrson scampered 13 yards to the 49 to start the Hawk drive near midfield. A crucial Johnson to Nick Kowalski pass on third and six moved the Hawks to the Canyon View 34. Then on fourth and two from the 26, Johnson rolled out to the right and tossed to his fullwho made a back Uhrson, beautiful grab in full stride to give the Hawks a first down at the nine. That was the last play of the third quarter, and on the first play of the fourth, Johnson hit Kowalski in the end zone to put the Hawks back on top. Andersons kick was blocked, so the Sanpete lead stood at 20 to 14. Whether it was a lapse of intensity by the Hawk defense, or a champions effort by the Falcon next offense, what happened silenced the North Sanpete crowd just as it started buzzing about the upset in progress. three-yar- one-hand- Starting from his own 22 after the kick off, Gayson dashed 45 yards to the Hawk 33. On the very 'next play, Janes kept the ball and sprinted into the end zone to tie the score. Sanpetes lead had lasted only 40 seconds. With a chance to put Canyon View ahead, Gayson flubbed the extra point, kicking it weakly off to the right. Pinned back on its own ten after the kick off, Sanpete had to punt the ball back to Canyon View, giving them good field position at their own 47 with 7:35 remaining in the game. Following a first down, Gayson ran for 30 yards to the Hawk ten, and things looked bleak for the home team. But Janes, running the option to the right, made a poor pitch toward Gayson. Kade Church pounced on the loose ball as it bounced around, giving the Hawks new life at the 17. Sanpete gained a first down at the 28. Coach Calles spent last week preparing his team for a tough ride through conference play, electing to iron out a few wrinkles in practice, rather than another, tournament. This is not the first time Snow has hosted CSI and TVCC, however, this is the first time the games will count in the confer- ence standing. Since the conception of the SWAC, the conference has been divided into two separate divisions, north and south. Last fall, conference officials made a move to legitimize the leagues strength on a national level, removing the division status in favor of a full conference schedule.
