The program produced many significant music educators in the state in the beginning of the 20th century. Snow graduate, Lewis Dorius, went on to establish the first band program at Delta High School; W.H. Terry left Snow to direct high school bands in Cache Valley; his brother, J.L. Terry, led early bands in Richfield and Morgan; William Brady spread his talent throughout Utah and Idaho. One man who did extremely well upon completion of his education at Snow was N.W. Snow College will celebrate 100 years of music with a concert by the college symphonic band at 8 p.m., in the Crane Theatre followed by a dance, featuring the Jazz Ensemble at 9:30 p.m., in the new Greenwood Student Center on Thursday, March 13. Tickets are available at the door for each or both events. Vance Larsen, current director of bands at Snow Collet'' did Colsome research abo; S... leges band mgram while pursus degree in music ing his ma at BYU. He has published his findings and has also invited as many of the music program alumni as he could find addresses for this event. Without the research done by Larsen, this year would have likely passed without anyone knowing about the centennial significance to the music program. "This would have been just another year and we would have missed any chance to celebrate and honor those who got this whole thing started," stated Larsen. "Snow Colleges program was one of the first in the intermountain west and in the state, and therefore responsible for educating a number of people who later went on to start programs at high schools and other colleges in the area," said Larsen. Snow was one of the first schools in Utah to offer a program in music education. The band originated in 1897 under the direction of Jimmy Clawson, a coronet player of local renown. The early beginnings of the program have played a major role in the development of bands in public schools throughout Utah. Frank Christensen established a program in 1904 that allowed students to receive diplomas and M- . M- sor Ralph Booth to eliminate from the band and orchestras repertoire everything of a boisterous and jazz nature," according to Larsen. "We kind of had jazz ploration of continually moving images. The Dance Club will also perform one dance. Patrick Larsen, a theatre student, will be doing the lighting design, and art student Lisa Holt designed the poster. The evening performance will include student pieces: "Grandpa Clancey" choreographed by Melanie Thacker to music from the sound track "The Man From Snowy River"; Angular Angles choreographed by Lisa Franson to the music by Mickey Hart; a collaborative dance by Amy Kenison and Rachel Gale entitled "The Wall" using a piece of music by Philip Glass; and a Martha Graham style dance choreographed by Jennifer Nelson to music by Lisa Jerrard. Lindsay Ellis has choreographed two dances. One will be performed by the Dance Club entitled Animism to music by Robert Rich, and the other a dance exploring the influences from group and individual interactions, also to music by Lisa Jerrard. Col- lege Dance Department will be performing a recital on Saturday, March 15 in the Crane Theatre. The program, performed by the Dance Major and Minor students at Snow College will begin at 8 p.m. Students are selected for the program by audition and have a serious desire to improve and enhance their knowledge and technique of dance. "Technique as building blocks of dance" is the objective of the program, that teaches students to integrate the various aspects of ballet, modem and jazz techniques to give them a broad knowledge of the body in motion. The recital is entitled" Qualitative Movement" and is open and free to the public. "Building for the Future", the convention theme, encompasses attracting and strengthening partnerships with NRCS and other entities. Excellent speakers, including Reverend Daniel Parker and astronaut Mike Mullane; an outstanding State flag presentation; informative Conservation Expo; and entertainment by Jon Chandler (Keepers of the Flame fame); made this convention an outstanding and inspiring event, according to Art King, board member. Utah received two coveted honors. Ron Hellstern, a teacher at South Cache Freshman Center, was awarded second place for Secondary Teacher of the Year. Nancy R.
