Show March 12, 1997 - The Pyramid - Page Five Moroni gets new fire truck MORON- I- The city recently received a new fire truck, a Becker Custom Truck, on Feb. 20. Dean Jensen, fire chief; Paul Anderson, assistant fire chief; councilman and volunteer fireman, Greg Morley; and John Jensen, Sanpete County Fire District representative travelled to Casper, WY to pick up the new truck. Mack Morley, turkey grower and Forrest farmer; Christensen, custodian at Moroni High School; Warren Blackham, carpenter; Richard Salisbury, owner of Salisbury Cleaners; Merlin Nielsen, mechanic at Nielsens Garage; Kay Ostler, employee at Thermoid; Earl Blackham, mechanic; and Roy Moss, manager of Farmers Co-o- p Service Station. The Volunteer Fire Department was organized in October of 1947 with the help of the Arc Club. They purchased their first fire truck, the "Bumble Bee,". In 1948, the firemen responded to some IS alarms. Damage was relatively low, accounting to less than $2,000, but the firemen realized . that overconfidence breeds disaster. In August of 1947, just two months before the department became active, a $20,000 fire swept through Home Supply Furniture Company. The first 10 firemen were: Charles Christensen, mayor; Boyce Jensen, fire chief and owner of Vemiles Grocery Store; When Senator Leonard Blackham was a county commissioner, he wanted all of the city and town fire departments to have the same opportunity to have good equipment and vehicles, so he helped to start the Sanpete County Fire District, Special Service District 2. "It is one of the most important things that has been started in Sanpete County. Senator Blackham wanted every town and and city in Sanpete to be to help each other. He wanted all of them to be as equal as possible," said Dean Jensen, fire chief. up-dat- ed Diabetes Association to hold screening March 25 SALT LAKE CIT- Y- The Also, the Alerts goal is to American Diabetes Association help people understand that modurges people to discover their est changes in eating and exercise risk for a silent disease that kills habits make a big difference. Presently, the district has purchased three pumper trucks that went to Fountain Green, Manti and Moroni; and one brush truck that went to Ephraim City. As the city receives new trucks, one of theirs is distributed to another city or town. Miscellaneous The council agreed to set aside $25 for the annual Sterling Scholarship Fund. Councilman Larson suggested the Youth Council donate the money out of their budget since two of their hold members scholarships. Councilman Pipher said he would discuss it with the youth council. The council entertained changing insurance providers when they were informed their current provider wants to charge them $25 per month to bill the city unless they switch to electronic billing. PLEASAN- T- Lot splits, criminal complaints, water connections for county property, and proposed subdivision were among issues discussed during a city council meeting held Feb. 25. A public meeting was held preceding the regular council meeting for citizen input about the proposed Cedar West Subdivision. A few residents expressed concern about the impact of water usage that another subdivision will create. Comments were taken under advisement by the mayor and council. The council unanimously approved four lot splits recommended by planning and zoning and to have a joint meeting with them for continued work on the General Plan and Cedar West Subdivision. Jack Martin and George Smith, Aspen Village residents, appeared before the council awaiting a response to 24 criminal complaints signed by various residents and given to die police last September, October and November. Councilman Bona had Randy Lee, police officer, to respond officially to the resident. Lees response was that he couldnt recall most of the complaints, but said that some were complicated so he had turned them over the citys prosecuting attorney. Martin was dismayed at the continued delay. Mayor Christensen assured Martin that six months is really not too long to wait for a decision concerning city ordinances. No action was taken when Rhea Stewart appeared before council to ask for city sponsorship of Sanpete Youth Pioneer Pageant. George Anderson and Mr. Rasmussen each appeared to request water connections to their county property. No action was taken when Ray Andress, board member of Fairview Lakes home owners,, appeared to request extending' electrical service to residents of Fairview Lakes, who would bear the burden of cost. Councilperson Jarrett shared her recommendation for a new procurement policy, which the council moved to continue to look into the issue. Denis Andelin appeared before council to request a zone change so that he could build a home for his aging parents on his property. A vote was taken and it was decided to postpone the issue until another date.
