MID-STAT- 0 Appointments for & Exams Today, some may watch him play football on Sunday afternoon as a defensive end for the New York Jets and think hes just another overpaid athlete making tons of money because he grew up larger than most of us. The truth is some folks at Snow College helped him learn how to work hard to earn his chance to play football. The staff in the Student Support Services Department recognized a need for help for Duane and reached out to make a permanent difference in his life. "I saw it change my life," said Sanders. "I learned a lot more here than what is offered in classes. I learned things about how to manage my money and how to plan my time so that studying came first. In less than two months I was homesick, but my older brother and father said I was meant to come to Snow and I should stay put. " Duane was destined for stardom on the football field and in the beginning spent most of his time on the grass. However, in addition to being homesick, Duane was also having financial troubles trying to live away from home for the first time. "My family loved me, but they didnt want me back in L.A.," Duane added. "Thank goodness Snow was small enough 1 could get to know people and they got to know me. What I noticed and appreciated most was they cared about me as a person, not just as an athlete. "Most of the athletes I know consider Claudia Olsen, student support service office manager, as a mother away from home," said Duane. "I cant express enough appreciation to her for making me do my homework and studies first. Thats what made it possible for me to be successful when I continued my college career at Washington State. " Learning how to manage his time allowed Duane the chance to participate in a wide variety of Snow activities. He participated in ballet, theatre, choir, the Polynesian Luau and was also invited to speak at baccalaureate services. Duane said he was nervous about fitting into the university environment when he arrived at Pullman, WA, to continue his ft EPHRAI- M- Snow College fall quarter enrollment has hit an unprecedented high of 2,345, which are mostly second-yea- r students, returning to classes combined with transfers from other institutions.
