Hunters, of course, have waited all year for this season to come and are loving their time on the mountain. This is a great time for football. Its especially great if you are a North Sanpete High or Snow College fan. Those teams are riding high. If you have just arrived from Gopher Gulch, NM and havent yet heard, the Hawks are numero uno in Utah 3 A football. Gunnison and Manti are not having stellar seasons but are providing good entertainment. The Snow? Dixie game this coming Saturday in St. George Were is a huge game for the schools. Snow is ranked fourth in the nation. Dixie weighs in at number two. Both teams are unbeaten and will be fighting tooth and nail to stay that way. I hope that we have a big contingent of fans show up in St. George to the game. It would show the crowd that the Badgers are supported in a big way. Halloween is coming up. Have you noticed how some people are putting up lights on their houses for Halloween ala Christmas time? It seems like the decoration and light manufacturers are finding ways to enhance (exploit) every holiday on the calendar. Actually its quite fun to see places decorated. I wonder when the peer pressure will reach the level where Ill be crawling around on the roof hanging Halloween lights? Autumn in Sanpete is great. Get out and enjoy the season. Whether its closing down the garden, going to a football game, sitting on a hillside and listening to a baseball game, putting pumpkins and a shock of corn on the porch, walking the dog through dry, crunchy leaves, hunting an elusive buck, or whatever it is that you do; have fun!... Merrill Does majority rule reflect principles of Democracy? Dear Editor: Some time ago, I watched an old western on television. As best as I can recollect, a gang of armed men in the desert happened onto an old blind miner and his granddaughter. It was discovered they had a profitable gold mine. The men discussed the situation. One man suggested killing the old man, raping the girl, and then dividing the gold amongst the group. man Another protested that course of action, whereupon the first man called for a vote. All but the lone dissenter voted for the first mans plan. The first man said, "Majority rules," and the gang commenced to fire their guns on the dissenter. It was an interesting lesson in democracy. A few years ago, I attended a town meeting, intending to voice opinions contrary to those of the council. I was of the understanding that public comment was desired. Not unchecked majority rule, I thought, but a yes or no answer had been demanded. "Thats what I thought," stated the councilman, with contempt. After the meeting, I attempted to refer the councilman to Madisons opinions on the matter. "I am not interested in reading a book, was the straight forward reply. In my opinion, the founders and framers of our country had some remarkable understandings and ideas. The systems and principles they established, I believe, work to all our benefits. People may cry over and kiss the flag, yet have little regard for the concepts it represents. I dont worry about those who burn the flag, not nearly as much as I do about those who burn the concepts or the republic for which it stands. Brad VanDyke Spring City deceived by fraud Dear editor, I had the experience of seeking legal action on a verbal contract. A citizen acting as an agent for a financial institution gave guarantees that aided in my decision to proceed with the application. I felt the legal actions I was pursuing were as solid as concrete because I was not only given a verbal guarantee, I was given indisputable messages that if the company would not carry through, the agent would. All went well as was presented and discussed. But I lost because of the Statute of Frauds (25-5-- 4 Utah Code). In our occupation (insurance), this doesnt come up, because if we do an untruth the State of Utah pulls our agent licenses as a way to serve the public. My message is: If its black, call if black. Dont picture it or portray it as gray. I have faith in mankind, but it is on court record that I was deceived by a FRAUD. Dont place yourself under a glass shelter. There are individuals like this in our midst. Ronald L. Ivory tana. A month later, on Sept. 18, in Grand Canyon National Park, he decreed a land lockup twice the size of Yellowstone in an attempt to kill development of a one trillion dollar coal deposit-th- e nations largest. In both instances, Clinton not only disregarded the will of Westerners, but refused to advise the states elected officials of what he was about to do. Clintons actions are not only disdainful of the West, they are detrimental to the nation: Americans will be denied hundreds of billion of dollars of new wealth that would have pulsed through the nations economy, generating jobs, opportunity, and tax revenues. ar ht nAs if that werent enough, the Clinton Administration plans to release the endangered condor in southern Utah to fly over an area the size of the State of Ohio, economic further threatening activity. Clintons Utah land lock-u- p may also be illegal. The Antiquities Act of 1906, under whose authority Clinton took his unilateral action, limits the power of the president to "historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest. " My reading of what was said at Clintons photo opportunity on the edge of the Grand Canyon In addition, despite the requirement of the Antiquities Act that presidential action "be confined to the smallest area" possible, Clintons decree was exceedingly broad. For example, swept up in Clintons expansive ban arc lands granted to the State of Utah for the education of its children, another potential violation of law. Clintons promise to protect "valid existing rights" within the new monument will last as long as, in Congresswoman Susan Molinaris words, "a Big Mac abdard Air Force One". Clintons Justice Department has argued before an entire U.S. Court of Appeals that the phrase, "valid existing rights" in the words of one judge who heard it, is "meaningless. What Clinton did with his Utah decision (announced from more than 100 miles away in Arizona) was not, as U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch said, to "declare war on the West" . He did that in early 1993. CORRESPONDENTS North Sanpete, American Constitution balanced and checked majority rule with free discussion, due process, and protection for individual and minority rights. Otherwise, they believed that majority rule could become mob rule. James Madison, father of the Constitution, in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, said it something like this, "You fear the tyranny of the monitory, I, the tyranny of the majority. Our wise Constitution has dealt with both. This passed through my mind as I paused. The councilman demanded, "Answer the question.
