Varsity candidates scrimmage in pads for first time this week. Twenty lettermen will have their work cut out for them to duplicate the Templars 2 record from last year. That was their best performance in their history. Six veteran players are gone via the graduation route and theyll be missed, Coach Brenan Jacksop said. Three of them, Alan Cox, Josh Grant Jackson and Greg Jacobsen were named to the teams. All three got a lot of playing All time in the versus Star game last week. Alan Cox directed the offense and threw two touchdown passes, one to 2 Josh Grant in a victory. Greg Jackson came through with some tough line play. This bum will begin on or between Aug. 20, and may continue through Oct. 30. The purpose of this prescribed bum is to remove a portion of the conifer through burning and regenerating healthy aspen stands which have been crowded out by the conifer. Through ecological succession healthy aspen stands have, over time, become decadent and have been crowded out by the white fir and subalpine fir. The result of the prescribed bum is expected to be a mosaic of vegetation types, increased forage production for wildlife and livestock, reduced al fuels and risk of destructive wildfires. As this bum occurs, public access in the entire Canal Canyon area will be restricted. Forest service personnel will be in the area to monitor the bum and inform the public during the actual ignition process. This bum is being conducted as a joint effort between the Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Elk Wildlife Forever Foundation, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. GREE- N- In a motion by councilman Syme, the council unaminously voted to accept a new sewer rate pay structure, in the Aug. 2 city council meeting. Sewer billing will be split into three monthly rates, $15, $25, and $35. The first 67 households having the lowest meter readings will pay $15 monthly or about $180 yearly. The next 136 households will pay $25 per month or about $300 yearly. The large water user groups of 67 households will pay the new cap rate of $35 monthly for a yearly cost of about $420. Meter readings taken from October to April will be used as the basis for billing. Syme said actual grouping numbers will change depending on number of households hooked up to sewer. To ensure the project is paid for once billing starts, houses required to hook up to the sewer and become unoccupied will still have to pay the minimum amount. It was also discovered Sunrise Engineering had sent the city the right rates but the. wrong "base rate. The base was $17 not $15. Mayor Hanseh once again recommended this policy also be applied to water billing as well. It would mean even if a landowner has his water turned off, he will still have to pay minimum rate. During the report from a Sunrise engineer, the council had a long list of corrections from manholes incorrectly positioned to many cleanups not being done. Several members expressed concern that Condie had residents sign off for clean-u- p and repairs that were not done and some methods were dubious. sign-oOne councilman alleged that when a resident didnt sign off, the representative came back later in the residents absence and got his wife to do it. Council cautioned residents to check clean-u- p and repairs before signing off on them. Mayor Hansen read aloud a letter sent to the city from David Coombs. ff MHS ladies have high hopes by Bruce Jennings Girls high school MANTI volleyball tryouts are underway at Manti high School with varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams to be selected this week. Last year the Lady Templars finished fifth in region. Coach Leslee Warr foresees a stronger finish this year. Why? "More experience," she says. "We were " very young last year. with five home games: Rowland Hall Sept. 26; Juab Sept 28; Gunnison Oct. 3; South Summit Oct. 10; and Millard Oct. 12. For all games, freshmen will play at 4 p.m.; junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.; and varsity at 7 p.m. Coach Warr said, "If this schedule looks a little strange, it is because we play the northern division teams once and southern division teams twice." 1 I wont work. At the council meeting, Co-ombs also related that Sunrise did not place the lateral where it was supposed to be. Potter reaffirmed Sunrises letter that they will not help Coombs dig up the lateral or by his house or check the slope, but did relate to him there will be an inspector there when he puts in his sewer line. Mark Coombs Councilman expressed doubt about Sunrise keeping their promises but Potter assured everyone that all houses hooked to the sewer will work. 1: t In zoning issues, Odel Miner told the council the zoning commission has put the "language" in ordinances that will limit Fountain Green residents to a four-foot high fence on frontage of homes, 25 feet from comer of road and on either side of driveways. Miner also related the next public meeting held prior to making the revised ordinances into law will be held Wednesday, Aug. 9. In other business, a resident complained about increased ATV traffic down her street. She also complained of a farmer driving too fast in a farm truck. Her concern was for young children in the area. Council also passed a motion accepting the telephone franchise contract. -- j ; ;; ;; ' ; : I ; : SANPETE VALLEY HOSPITAL Position Announcements The Lady Templars play their first games on schedule at Panguitch on Aug. 24, and on the road again for North Sevier Tournament in Salina, ,Aug. 26.
