The partially decomposed remains, tentatively identified as Craig Victor Johnson, 18, of Lindon was discovered in a back canyon section of the park at 5:30 p.m. He had been missing since April 30. Craig was the son of Marion and Maureen Johnson, Lindon and the grandson of Theron and Thelma Madsen, Spring City. It appears there had been a fall down a steep cliff, said Sheriff Ken Washington County Campbell. Positive identification and cause of death, said Campbell, would be determined in an autopsy to be performed by the state medical examiners office in Salt Lake City. Tauchen of Bloomington came upon the body, lying in a narrow neck of a deep enclave in the southwest portion of Hidden Canyon. It was laying out in the open, said Gregory. It appeared he had fallen. He was in a fairly open area. I cant imagine how he was missed, said Gregory, adding that the victim had what appeared to be a severely broken leg. Johnson apparently fell down a rugged sandstone cliff located in the southern portion of the parks Hidden Canyon area, about xk miles north and I1 miles west of a dirt service road, Campbell said. Sheriffs Deputy Herb Hopkinson was the first law officer to arrive at the scene. Hopkinson was later joined by Campbell Sheriffs Det. Mike Excell and Lowry Snow, deputy county attorney, along with six Washington County Search and Rescue members. It took an hour and 45 minutes to walk into the remote area for an onsite investigation before the remains were sent to the examiners office. "It appears he fell off the cliff and died from the fall, Campbell added. Johnson left to hike alone in the park on a Saturday, April 30. He was reported missing the following' Monday, May 2. He was gearing only a levis, and sneakers, said his friends, and he hadnt planned on staying overnight. His green and white car was located on a turnout near the north entrance of the park just off of State Route 18 and a search was launched. By May 4, tracking dogs, a helicopter from Hill Air Force Base in Ogden and a woman with clairvoyant powers had joined in the search that centered on the northwest end of the Hidden Canyon area of the park, away from where the body was ultimately found.
