Green; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ray (Dorothy) Nielsen, Moroni; and a Rhea Bradley, 462-244- 1 By Thomas Reeve, Sanpete County Agent MANTI solar hot water systems have performed suprisingly well from Preston, Ida. to St. George, Ut. This is in spite of ususual weather patterns with more cloud cover and rainfall that have prevailed over the state during the last 12 months. Wayne B. Ringer, USU Extension energy specialist, has conducted workshops on building your own solar units around the state of Utah the past two years. He said, These units are providing from 50 to 75 percent of the energy needed for consumable hot water. That means a considerable savings to each homeowner. The amount of savings to the family depends on the cost of fuel available for heating water, the location in the state and how well the system is balanced to the amount of hot water the family uses and other variables. Dr. Ringer has a solar domestic hot water system in his own home. It is one of 235 built during extension workshops held over the state and installed by the homeowners within r a period. The system with four solar collectors Ringer built for his own home has been in use for nearly a year. Though located in Cache Valley in Northern Utah it has performed very well. two-yea- summer, harvesting the suns energy in the form of hot water was both profitable and exciting," Ringer said. During a seven-da- y period in mid- - September, our gas water heater turned on just twice for a few minutes as the water tank temperature dropped below 125 degrees. Ringer attributed that to rain and cloud cover. Other days, the solar system provided all the hot water used by the family. He says new design innovations have become since available previous workshops. A more efselective ficient black chrome coating copper plate can substantially reduce radiation losses from the solar collector absorbed plate. Also, larger collectors may be built and solar collecting systems can be used for heating spas and hot tubs. These and other developments are discussed in an orientation class, scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 at the Sanpete County Courthouse.
