The cause of a helicopter crash in mountains east of Fairview last week was still undetermined on Oct. 6, when National Guard forces from Stead AF Base in Reno, Nev. recovered the downed aircraft. The recovery procedure involved the use of one of the largest copters in the free world, a CH 54 Skycrane made by Sikorsky. According to a National Guard spokesman, only a few of these large models are in the United States, and Nevada was the closest base employing one of the units. The giant craft carried the downed helicopter underneath its belly from the crash site to the Mt. Pleasant Airport where it was loaded onto a lowboy and transported to Corpus Christi, Texas. According to Lt. Col. Mabey of Utah National Guard Headquarters, the aircraft is rebuildable. Although the amount of damage could not be estimated, he said the cost of the unit was in the million dollar range. Sheriff Anderson said it was hoped some trace of the man could be found, but avalanche dogs brought in from Rocky Mountain Avalanche Control headquarters in Denver were unable to come up with any clues. The dogs are trained to sniff our avalanche victims under as much as three to four feet of snow. The Millers Flat area is covered with about that much snow from the heavy storms which began Sept. 28, searchers said. We feel like he is somewhere under the snow, Sheriff Anderson said.
