Like many young adult men in the Depression days, he could not find work. Mr. Nalder signed upfortwo terms with the CCCs (Civilian Conservation Corp). This interview explains his experience with the CCC organization. QUESTION: Why did you join the CCCs? Answer: There were no jobs. I needed something to do and my family needed the money. Q. DID you have to furnish proof that you were poor? A. No, everyone was out of work. The CCCs was a relief program like the WPA. Q. HOW much money did you earn? A. The base salary was $22 per month. This was sent home to the parents. An additional $8 was paid to the CCC worker. An assistant leader got $36 and a leader got $45, $22 always went home. You were furnished with clothing, food and lodging so the $8 monthly wage wasnt bad. It paid for movies, en- tertainment and snacks. Q. HOW long were you in the i CCCs? A. You signed up for a period of six months. I spent the first enlistment working in Farmington. I went down to When I the Provo camp. There was a limit of two years you could spend in the CCCs unless you were a leader in the program. Q. WHERE were the CCC Camp in Davis County? A. The home base was in Bountiful. There was an Eastern Group, a local group and a Woods Cross Group. You lived in a camp under army regulations. Most of the work headquarters was done under the supervision of d the forestry service. It was a job. In the winter time, you stayed in camp and worked on machinery, in the mess hall or preparing things for use in good weather. year-roun- Q. WHAT jobs were you given? A. I was assigned to the special camp in Farmington Canyon. I was a teamster. I worked on the roads and did some terracing. Much of my time was spent moving rocks oft the road and building a road. I also worked on the power crew. When I moved to the Provo camp, 1 was a truck driver and a First Aid instructor. We also built boundary fences between forest service property and private land. Q. WAS the work hard? A. You put in a days work. I remember once when I was working on the road in Farmington Canyon the government lost my records. They called me into the base camp in Bountiful to get the lost information for my records. I had to have my fingerprints taken. They couldnt get any fingerprints from me because my hands were so badly worn from moving rocks. I had to stay in the base camp for several days until the skin on my fingers healed. Q. WAS THE CCC organization needed? A. Yes, we completed many good projects. People are still from the CCC work toIt gaveyoung men jobs and day. they learned skills. I wish we had the CCCs now. There is a lot of work that needs doing and young kids could do it now. One good example is flood control. Chapter To Meet Wed.
