Show Wrestling - Lancers Host First ,84",85 Tommey YES, ITS early for wrestling, but dont think for a minute that the Layton High gym wont be a y beehive of wrestling for the period. Fridays action gets underway at 2:30 p.m. with two and a half rounds that will go until 9:30 that evening. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON -- There is one - two-da- athletic event where the statement, You are on your own, babe," never will get defined better. WRESTLERS live the statement perfectly. These guys never get anyone to set a pick for them and youll EVERYONE will come back Saturday at p.m. to wrap things up. The championship round for Saturday night is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Layton is the host team, a group of kids that Hansen says are capable of doing things they havent dreamed of. Two years ago it was Mike Hansens team n event that won the and last year it was Box Elder who claimed the handsome looking trophy for first place. It will take a major happening for us to win it, but Ive been surprised before, said the Layton coach. 1 never see people blocking their opponent for 200-poun- d them. Assists are unheard of in this sport, because theres simply two guys on a mat that arent about to. help each other in any way, shape or form. early-seaso- OTHER athletes may have to watch their diets, but it isnt anything like what a wrestler goes through. Yes, its their own choice to do so, but for those that stick around long enough and give pain to gain, there probably isnt a moment in sports that is more appreciated than to those e who stand atop the awards after beating anyone who stood in their way. It seems like just yesterday too, that the champs were being crowned in the state tournaments at Weber State. para-styl- THAT WAS last February, boy how time flies. Already the football pads are in storage and the seasons first big tournament is about to unfold. Its becoming tradition, at least for the past two or three years now, that when Thanksgiving turkey leftovers are gone its time for Mike Hansen to host 16 schools from throughout Utah in the seasons first big prep wrestling tournament of the season. Our turkey is gone so that means this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 30 and Dec. 1), Layton High will host their third annual Layton High Wrestling Tournament. ' BOX ELDER is coming back again to try and defend their title and along with them, will be fourteen other teams which include Ben Lomond, Spanish Fork, Clearfield, Roy, Weber, Gran- ger, Skyline, West Jordan, Pleasant Grove, Emery County, Morgan, Viewmont, Davis and Orem. Clearfield surprised a lot of folks last year by stabbing second place and another nice looking trophy. Can Scott Tennis and his troops of 1984-8- 5 repeat the same feat, or do even better? Well, Tennis isnt saying much right now and we dont blame him. He just wants to wait and see. OF COURSE thats the whole story to a tournament this early in the sesaon, a time for coaches to sit back and see what theyve got to work with. Hansen backed that up by saying, It gives the coaches a chance to see what theyve got. Bas- REGISTRATION will take place this Saturday, Dec. 1 at Davis High School at 8 a.m. The cost will be only $7 per player or $12 of which will be included a rt. e. WRESTLING this early doesnt always prove which team will be the toughest because many schools do a lot of juggling before the season is over. But these tournaments do give kids a chance to vault ahead. Many of the kids who took first place in our tournament last year eventually went on to take state or place quite high. The tournament will feature a double elimination format. In the end there will be six wrestlers in each weight division that will be given medals compared to the four that were given out the previous two years. Were trying Vaughn Casdorph will be in Davis Tournament. line-u- p when Darts invade Layton this weekend for Layton High to do everything possible to make this a respectable tournament, said Hansen. THERE ISNT room here to isolate all the Davis County kids that will be competing this weekend, but while were talking about a Layton event, it might be nice to say a few words about some of Hansens kids. One of them is Brian Bailey who will be competing at 138 pounds. This guy, from his boyhood days in Oklahoma to this very day, has endured a love for wrestling that is something like your fondness for your favorite dessert. Bailey has placed very high in state his past two years as a Lancer and even though he figures hell be in one of the toughest weight divisions in the state, hes gunning for the championship like nobodys business. ANOTHER is Brent Higgs at 145. Higgs hasnt done bad either in each of his first two seasons at Layton. His sights are set on winning the Region One title again and knocking em dead at state. Higgs is a genuine type of kid, the kind who has no business playing football as a lineman at 145 pounds, but dos it anyway and gets the job done favorably. There are some other Layton names that could emerge this season too, guys like Larry Kaysvilles championship Commissioners Cup team coached by coaches, Udell Kynaston and Stan Webster. Front row, (1 to r) David Read, Jon Turner, Justin Morris, Aaron Rasmussen, Matt Guiste and Brian Webb. Back row, Joel Garr, Wiley Adam, Jason Farris, Brian Kynaston and Ronnie Bisen. Sitting, Kemp Flint and Joey Arbuckle. Missing were Jordan Jeppson and Chad Pettingill. DAVIS WILL benefit from the move-i- n of Scott Moon who has been playing for the past five or six years in Germany. Moon is a 1 nephew from Layton coach Doug Moon. Three more seniors that will contribute this season will be Danny Hall at Andy Neff at 3 and Keith Hunsaker at LAYTON - I think were ready to bounce back, said Laytons Doug Moon. 4 season in After a dismal which the Lancers fought with all they had to stay out of last place in Region One there is some positive vibes coming from the coaches and players that things will generally be much better this year. : LAYTON DOES know how to win in basketball, just ask Darrell Martin one of the clubs guard this year who was a player on the team two years ago that won three of state tournafour games in the ment and took home the consola 6-- 6-- 4, 6-- 6-- 2. -- 83-8- 4-- A tion championship. Id have to say that when I leave Layton High, it will be hard to forget that experience as a sophomore. Id just like to have one more of them as a senior, said Martin. Martin could well be one of the quickest players in the area and will help Moon as both a guard and forward. Hell have to do it for us, hes the only starter coming back from last season, said Moon, He knows what I expect out there and more importantly hes been on a winning team. LAYTON WILL open their new basketball season Friday with a game against Murray High at Murray. The following Tuesday they will travel to Cottonwood and their season opener will come against Kearns a week from this Friday. Other players that Moon will be counting on this year will be 0 Dan Bankhead, 6-- 4 Rex Brimhall and 6 Dusty Parry as a junior. $ Hercules Whitewall MS Steel Radial Hercules Radial Import MudSnow Radial Steel radials for RVs and pickups.
