Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, NOVEMBER 28, 1984 Sellers Addresses Kiwanis The Layton Kiwanis Club meeting at the Valley View Golf Course heard Don Sellers, training director for the Idlewine Pet Care Center, speak on training dogs. MR. SELLERS stated that you need to have an understanding of dogs psychology in order to train them successfully. The most basic factor of aog psychology is the fact that dogs are pack animals. This means the dog is a social animal which does not adapt well to solitary existence. Also in his natural state each dog in a pack understands his role and status in the pack and needs to receive direction from the pack leader. The human dog owner or handler has to replace the pack leader in the dogs mind. This means that the handler must frequently give the dog correction and praise. The dog reacts emotionally to his interaction with other pack members. Usually the dogs pack is his human family. A common emotional problem is jealousy on the part of the dog to family members, particularly a new baby. This occurs when the dog has established his position in the family pack, having a social status, next to the child. When a baby comes along, the dog is displaced from his status and resents it. He may eventually bite the child. Anytimes fun time for a fair, as these Crestview Elementary School third graders found out, recently. They included: Julia Willard, left, Kara Heath and Carl Nelson, with Student Teacher Julie Yamada. FAIR ION' When a poison d Mis. It is one of the outstanding memories former students recall. I AY nor-mal- selection of a pet of the wrong breed. Some breeds adapt better to the human pack. The dogs which have been bred to accept man best are the sporting breed and the toy breeds. On the other hand breeds which have not been selectively bred for as long a time are generally not people oriented and have a stronger drive to be with other dogs. Afghans are particularly strong examples of the latter type. IT IS best to begin training puppies when they are quite young. From 7 to 16 weeks of age, a puppy the imprint stage. This is the time when he is most impressis in ionable and will be most likely to remember his experience. It is much harder to teach basics after the dog is older. A puppy who learns to socialize properly with humans and other dogs and acquires basic discipline and voice commands will be a much better mature dog. It is good to let children interact with puppies. The puppy learns to accept the child as a pack leader. After the fact correction is a useless exercise in dog training. The stimulous pattern which this creates makes the dog fear the owners presence, but will have no fear or repulsion reaction if the owner is not present. Simultaneous correction on the other hand creates stimulous which of revision toward the undesirable behavior. Open House Slated An open house will be held at the home of Verl and Dorotha Walker, 325 Oaklane Drive, Kasyville, honoring Clover Sanders on her 81st birthday and Mrs. Jan Cranny Davis, celebrating her 82nd birthday. They become very competitive. It is better to get dogs of the opposite sex, they are more able to adapt to comparative y social status.
