Journal Sports - CLEARFIELD Friday. Oct. 26 began just like any other normal day, but in the end at least a few hours of that day proved to be an emotional experience probably not to be forgotten by two prep football teams. THE victory, a tough and gritty one, brought a chorus of celebration cries from the Clearfield locker room. With Craig Carter and Greg Boseman taking Highland in one of eight interregion playoff games, this writer dug out one very good reason why Clearfield rose to the occasion in 84. 35-ya- over from there, the Falcons moved the pigskin to Roys one yard line where Boseman went over for Clearfields only score. The PAT attempt was blocked. Another junior, Vaun Waite commented, The defense played well all night and finally on offense we sucked it up in one drive and punched it in." COACH HANCOCK stated, wasnt pretty but well take As It it. Ive stated before, these kids didn't have a lot of success in the past but our coaching staff didnt give up on them. We chached the people we had and made the best of it. THIS GROUP has been a different kind of kids. If you yelled at them theyd pout and if youd compliment them they didn't know if they could win. The kids had never let themselves go and see what they could do because of their negative past. We still havent seen the best from this group. Hopefully Hancock can get the best from his kids when they host highland this week in the Falcon's first playoff game of 1984. EVERY MORNING One thing about the speed of light, it gets here too early in the morning. Tribune, Chicago -- THE CLEARFIELD kids, af least the seniors, hadn't had much success as juniors and sophomores but they never stopped dreaming they could do the impossible. And thats one good reason why they because they did believe went deep down inside they could win. Jeff Folk, one of the talented juniors on the club noted, When we first started the season, the dream of winning the region title was there even though it was in the back of our minds. 4-- 1, VIEWMONT destroyed us and damper on things but we never stopped coming back, which we ended up doing all season long. it put a Greg, my older brother who played here last season and who has tried to see most of our games, said it wasnt this teams character to be ahead by 20 points. He agrees with me that weve always been a team. Maybe thats called character. hope it come-from-behi- know we haven't got any super-star- s on this team and it was Coach Lund who let us know during the summer that the only way we were going to be successful was to gut it out to the end with nearly every team we played. Of course he said we'd have to be in shape to do that and he motivated us to get in shape and stay in shape." WAITE WAS one who had to stay in shape because of the call to go both ways as a guard on offense and a tackle on defense. Lund, who came to Clearfield High from North Layton Junior High two seasons ago. has been a pleasant addition to the Clearfield football program. People say they enjoy his positive approach and hard work ethics. EVEN AS Clearfield prepared for Highland this week, a game that will surely test the Falcons. Lund commented. We can beat Highland. We beat Woods Cross and Woods Cross beat Highland." d But Lund is also enough and realistic. An example of that was in the beginning of the season when he noticed that he didn't think the Falcons could win more than two games all season. I REALLY thought that because of the seniors performance last year as junior varsity players. But, in the back of my mind. I was optimistic because of the way these kids got after our weight and conditioning program. In the end it paid off for them. All through the season they worked hard in the weight control room and when the last game of the season finally rolled around, everybody was healthy and ready to play. level-heade- THE KEY to the season was beating L aytop I thought. The kids had some memories of last season come back to them after the Davis loss but they gutted it up and beat the Lancers. From there we had enough emotion and drive to beat Weber and Bonneville. "This region isnt the toughest in the state but we proved we were the best ig it along with Box Elder. For that the kids can be mighty proud, no matter what happens from now on. There arent many football trophies in our case but now there is one. PERHAPS THIS group of kids have started something really positive here. Theyve taken advantage of one of the best weightroom facilities in the state and because they have theyre bigger, stronger and faster. In the last three or four minutes of our close games. believe the kids had the mental as well as physical toughness to get the job done. The kids really get after it in 1 there." Hancock loves the job Lund has done and stated it publicly, saying, "Since the season has begun, only one kid has quit on us. only one. Much of the credit for that goes to Coach Lund for his getting the kids involved in the conditioning program. don't think a kid on this didnt feel like he didn't belong because of the way Lund got them involved in weightlifting and conditioning. WEVE BEEN faithfully lifting since Day No. and now that we're into the 1th week of the season including the two weeks of were completely healthy. Weve lost some players at times but have seen them come back through Brents rehabilitation and conditioning program. With Brent taking over that part of the program ive been able to oversee other things. I REALLY believe that weve got something started here." 1 I two-a-day- s, WHAT DOES HARRY GERLACH BEUEVE? INFLATION-TAXATIO- Inflation increases the County Budget yearly. To combat this, the County Commission must guarantee that every Tax Dollar produces efficiency. 1 is. SO THERES one reason why Clearfield got the job done, good ole fashioned character and a willingness to never quit. In the five games Clearfield has won to this point, in three of them they had to come from behind to pull out victories. But my favorite investigative reason w hy Clearfield has been so competitive in the win column this year is something most of us have overlooked. And that's the physical condition this team has been in. HANCOCK gives much or all of the credit to his assistant coach Brent Lund. There has been no question about it, the Clearfield kids have hung tough in some gutty games this year and each time they were a little above their opponents when it came to physical conditioning. THE FALCONS survived two overtime games with victories and hung in tough in every other close game with the best of them. Coach Lund spent his entire and other summer in conditioning measures with his Clearfield kids. Even when the season got started the conditioning program moved ahead with great force. The conditioning program eventually helped players like Brad Weathers and Bruce Browning come back from injuries and play an important part in Clearfield's winning the region crow n.
