Show Casey Lloyd, QB, who had a very impressive day passing against Highland, here hands off to Dave Kinard. an( Kinard churns and burns for more yardage. . . Win 4th Straight Title t finally hit Chris Card for a Davis to Highlands gainer to line. From there it was Robinson who carried it over. If all that wasn't good enough, Lloyd made the Highland coaches gulp when he found David Kinard over the middle for 22 yards and a first down in Davis next series of By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports gt KAYSVILLE - Many critics or whatever they call themselves, Sclaimed Davis wouldn't go undefeated through their 1984 Region Four schedule, 'despite the fact jhey were still picked to win it. -- BUT JIMMY Dickson and his Screw proved'em wrong again as 1 loss on 'the Darts nailed a Highland last Friday afternoon to 'finish with a perfect 0 record in region and an even more glossy 0 and regmark through 24-2- 5-- 9-- pre-seas- ular. That now makes it three years straight a Davis team has failed to ;be beaten in Region Four play, now id over three years of action. It jalso makes the fourth consecutive Region Four championship for the Darts who are the only champion in football this region has ever Sknown. Bountiful did tie Davis jot the region crown the first year the region went into action, but from that point on the Darts have simply keen way too much for anyone to handle. j 5-- i ; catch helped Davis out on a third and 10 situation deep in their own ij Roger Clawson get free over the middle. Lloyd connected with Clawson and 70 yards later Davis led 14-It was a game in which the Darts proved they could pass when they wanted to. With the running game shutdown momentarily, the Darts tuned-u- p a passing game that will make them a tough club to beat in the 84 playoffs. 0. LLOYDS OTHER TD pass came in the beginning seconds of the fourth quarter with the score tied at 14 apiece. After Hatch had territory. TWO PLAYS later, Lloyd demonstrated some of the greatest poise and consistency that hes picked up three yards on the shown all year long when he step- ground. Lloyd connected with ped back into the pocket and Kinard for eight yards and a first waited for a few moments to let down. One play later Lloyd swung a swing pass out to Card and Davis talented junior rambled 69 yards for Davis touchdown. On that play, Lloyd again showed plenty of poise as Highland sent a host of big people blitzing. He waited until just the right time and connected with Card. I guess the thing that motivated me was hearing the newspaper piece that the Salt Lake Schools were better than us. Everytime I called a defensive play I tried to get the guys going, trying to make them mad. I like creating excitement with the defense. Defensively the Darts looked tough again too. A lot of the credit has to get pinned upon Vaughn Casdorph who covered the Highland playing surface like nobody's business. CASDROPH commented afterwards, saying Highland hit hard and they wanted it too. I think we all knew theyd be tough so we had to prepare a little more mentally. HIGHLAND had their moments against the Darts especially when you consider they ran more offensive plays than Davis, The key unquestionably in this game as far as the scoring went was Mike Tremeas field goal with 6:58 left in the fourth quarter. The Darts had got within the Highland line with a first down but were denied a TD. That brought on 54-5- 0. rd Tremea who booted a TREMEAS field goal was the first field goal kicked to win a game since the 1974 state championship game against Bingham when Jay Cullimore was head coach, at least as far as Davis High goes. That Bingham-Davi- s was the first overtime game decided with the new four down format. We knew the game against Highland would be a battle and it turned out to be just that, said Dickson. In all honesty I was hoping it would be a close game and we were to win by just one point. Something to tell the kids they have to keep working harder than the week before. 0 win puts Davis into playoffs that begin jthe inter-regio- n this Friday. Davis will match-u- p with Weber High, the team Davis 'beat 37-1- 4 in their first game of the season. A win there would put Davis into the quarterfinals to be Splayed at the University of Utah. : For the first time this season, the THE 24-2- 1 Darts were outrushed in a football e game. That was compared to Highland's 5 of 21 passing and just 60 iyards. $ Lloyd, w ho is the apple of offensive coordinator Mike Gardner's eye, was simply nothing short of brilliant in the Highland game. The Davis QB passed incomplete on his first and iast pa.'.:.cs of the game but completed nine in a row through the gut of the contest which included two touchdown passes and one other that was called back. 1 ) I offensive plays. Kinards key am To Barts 1 IN DAVIS second offensive Series, Lloyd waited patiently as lhe Darts ran eight straight running plays. Then on a 2nd and 14 situation, Lloyd went to work and connected first with Mike Robinson Tor eight yards. He then went to Keith Hunsaker for another 15 and Clawson Channels Aggression By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE It wasjust three years ago that Roger Clawson decided to channel some of his boyhood aggression into a compatable place and today he is finally realizing the benefits. CLAWSON, one of the main cogs in Davis High's powerful football machine this year, had never played a down of football until his sophomore year at Davis. Prior to that time he had used every unde- sirable avenue to dish out his aggressive vibes. But thanks to the keen approach of people like Ward Sawley, Clawson was coaxed into a Dart football uniform and from that day forward hes been dishing out punishment through more controlled ways rather than like a wild hoodlum. IN THE beginning Clawson was as raw as you could expect a brand-nefootball player to be but today hes perhaps Davis High's finest candidate to someday go on and play major college football. From his defensive end and tight end positions, Clawson has continually become a better football player with every game the Darts have suited up for. w JIM DICKSON, who took over the Dart football program when Sawley left last summer, has been able to watch Clawson "do things we all knew were possible." Our goal from day No. was to help in any way we could to control Rogers aggressiveness into one thing. And that was football. HE HAS done it, not the coaches. He's very physical out there but he does his thing in a clean manner. When someone wants to come after him they had better have their helmets strapped on because hes going to hit them with everything that he has. WHAT MORE can you ask from a player? Dickson asked. Clawson, who has really jumped into the limelight lately with his pass catching ability at tight end, claims that his real strong point right now might be his defensive play. I FEEL comfortable at defensive end and you know that's where I can let go with some of my aggressiveness. Defensively as a team I dont think we've got the credit we deserve. Its the defense that has let the offense have the ball so much. Offensively, until just recently, I haven't been catching the ball in critical situations. Naturally teams havent been cueing on me as much. IVE HAD problems with my hands, like in the Bonneville game where they were the pits, Clawson said. But Roger it would appear has put the Bonneville game behind him because in the last two weeks against Viewmont and Highland he was a wizard in catching everything thrown his way. out of opponents. Take for instance last Friday's big showdown with Highland. In that game the Darts were leading 0 and they began a drive from their own 15 yard line. After Chris Card has been sacked up for no gain a couple of times and Lloyd has warmed up his passing arm to wingback, David Kinard, the explosion hit. 7-- LLOYD STEPPED back into the pocket and like an old pro waited at the very last minute forClaswon to break free over the middle. The senior QB hit Roger in the numbers and big No. 87 started a trek to the goal line for Davis second touchdown of the game. In that trek two defenders had their chance to bring Clawson down but he bulled his way through them and the rest was history, thanks to a great block from Carter Hatch. Its explosions like that that are causing opposing coaches to lay awake at night and contemplate how they'll stop Davis both on the ground and through the air. 70-ya- rd THERE ISNT a coach at Davis that isn't impressed with Clawson's intelligence. Mike Gardner had especially liked Clawson's coachable spirit. "The key to everything is concentration, said Clawson, "Both offensively and defensively. OFFENSIVELY with us. if your not with it on our blocking scheme, you'll be sitting the sidelines. 1 CASEY LLOYD and Clawson have teamed up to give the Darts a passing attack that scares the heck Defensively youve to be briefed well enough on the opponents offense and know your own ROGER CLAWSON capabilities to the point where you can know what is going on. Either scouting reports or little things you pick up on during games is what concentration is all about and concentration is what football is all about. AT and 215, Clawson should 6-- 5 be a solid candidate to play some college football someday. Clawson himself notes that he plans to work hard this winter to beef up a little Continued pg. 3 sports |
