Ive been a faithful San Francisco Giants baseball fan since the day they moved there from New York. Now how could that be? I wasnt even born yet. Dont ask me, thats just the way it is. I Soccer Success Respect Was Mutual With Coach And Kids By KEITH DUNCAN kids would do just about anything wanted of them as long as I treated them good and treated them with respect. That respect always came back, said the coach. That initial experience was three I Journal Sports For a couple of SUNSET hours last Saturday morning, there was a gathering of eight and nine year olds so entrenched in what they were doing at the time that an ice cream truck would have had no chance of even giving away its treats to those kids. years ago and since that time Duenas states that all of his players have been great kids and eager to please. dont coach like some coaches Ive seen do. I dont yell at the kids, but Im positive with SEE, I NOW THATS quite a statement. Eight and nine year olds refusing to recognize some free ice cream. Well, its true. The attraction was a very prestigious soccer game, in fact the final game that this group of kids would play until this fall. It happened to be for the state championship in the AYSO eight and nine year old division. BUT EVEN if the title game wasnt the magnetic force that en- grossed those kids, then it was and their coach, a guy by the name of Dennis Duenas. He and the kids made quite a combination, the respect for each other being quite mutual on both sides. To give you some kind of idea of that respect. Coach Duenas happened to be about 15 minutes late for the game because of a commitment to the National Guard. When he arrived at the big championship game, his kids were down by a couple of goals. No sooner had he showed up on the sidelines, his young troops had scored a couple of goals themselves and got back into the contest. fun-lovi- kid-lovi- AS IT turned out, the collection of young players from Northern Davis County lost in overtime to a group from Cottonwood in Salt It tagged the only Lake City defeat on the local team all season long, a group of kids that mostly included eight and nine year olds, plus some seven year olds and four kids who had never played soccer before in their lives. As the players followed their coach to receive their second place trophies, one youth spoke up admist all the confusion and said, Coach, I cant wait for fall to come. Were going to get em then. The comment was meant with every ounce of sincerity in the world and Coach Duenas just nodded and replied back, You bet we are. 5-- 4. THE STORY behind Duenas in- troduction into soccer is quite interesting, and one too that is probably not by itself. He tells of his sons desire to play soccer and how the team needed an assistant coach. But as it turned out, said Duenas, When I got there it turned out that I was the coach. THE FIRST couple of games were quite an experience. I watched other teams intently and tried to learn as much as I could. It wasnt too long before I was making up my own plays and ways of instructing the kids. Soccer clinics helped and games on television also were helpdeful, especially if the halftime voted some time to teaching guys like me. To be very frank, it was my first experience ever with the sport. AS TIME wore on, Duenas found one very important thing on his side and he described it. "The them. If they make a mistake, theres another time. They know whats going on. And the parents have been super too in letting them play. Ive seen a lot of kids cry on other teams, but I dont want that, theyve got to be able to enjoy themselves, continued the coach. The American Youth Soccer Organization, the league in which Duenas coaches has a rule that every kid will play at least a half a game and the coach says he totally agrees with that. Duenas goes one step beyond that and allowes each player to play at least two positions per game. WITH ALL of that and Duenas sticking by a philosophy of trying to coach as little as possible, the 1984 eight and nine year olds never lost a game until the final championship bout with Cottonwood. Along the way they snared the Davis Cup crown which represents supremacy in Region 198 which includes teams from Clearfield, Sunset, Syracuse, Clinton, Roy and West Point. From there the Duenas group rebounded into the state competition where they dealt both Park City and Sandy defeats before losing to SOMEDAY those boys by the bay are going to get their act together and have their fans waving Giant pennants in the World Series.
