To be eligible for the ADENAstudy program patients must be: * at least 50 years of age * diagnosedas havin probable Alzheimer's disease * in stable health * havea responsible caregiver Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers can learn _ MEDIC BACKGROUND Alzheimer’s disease is especially difficult for drug developmentsincethereis no easy way to measure the effect of treatment on the symptomsofthe disease. An effective medicine for Alzheimer’s should produce an improvement in the pe genie ability, ehavioral function, and activities of daily living. Cognitive ability refers to mentalfunctions such as memory, reasoning andorientation to time and space, and behavioral function refers to personality, mood and social graces. The normalactivities of daily livin, include everyday tasks suc! as shopping, driving, bathing and feeding oneself. In addition to other established scales, ADENAinvestigators will use theclinicians interview based impression of change (CIBIC-PLUS), using a semi-structured interview to assess the global changesin the patient's status. The IBIC-PLUSinterview guide allowsthe clinician to evaluate the patient’s cognitive impairment and behavioral function, plusit incorporates the caregiver's insightinto the patient's behavior and daily life activities. Thus, in the ADENA program, caregiverswill play an important role in theclinical evaluation of patients. Approximately 50 patients with probable mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease will take part in the ADENA (Alzheimer’s Dementia with SDZ ENA 713) study program in Salt Lake City out of 1200 in North America.
