A study shows those whose physicians rarely treat the disease die a year sooner AIDSis a new disease and, compared with many risky business. These patients are more likely to miss important treatment to forestall life-threatening problems. “Our results support the hypothesis that practice makesperfect.” said Mari Kitahata of the University of Washington, who conducted the study. She basedher results on 403 men with AIDS who were treated at the Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, a health-maintenanceorganization in Washingtonstate, between 1984 and 1994. She foundthat the risk of dying on any particular dayis a third less for AIDS patients whose physicians have lots of AIDS experience than for tiose whose doctors are seeing AIDSforthefirst time. There is no questions that if you know what you're doing, you'll do better. Andif patients know what they're doing, they'll go to a doctor who does a lot of this,” said Dr. Robert Schooleyof the University of Colorado. Of course, people will fare better if their doctors are experienced, no matter whatdisease they have. But infections with HIV, the AIDSvirus, are somewhat different from many other commonconditions. Unlike diabetes or high blood pressure, AIDSis such a newdisease that many doctors have no formal trainingin it, so they mustpick up what they know on the job Finds a Buyer For WordPerfect @ Continued from A-1 The new Corel-Utah division will operate out of three leased buildings on Novell's 14-building Orem campus. Corel also has operations at its Ottawa, Canada, headquarters and in Dublin, Ireland, Novell employees who join Corel can expect attractive wages and benefits, said Arlen Bartsch, Corel director of sales and marketing. They also will be offered stock options, he said “We have a commitmentto the brain trust we have here,” Bartsch told reporters at a news conference announcingthe deal. The new owner also plans a flurry of new product announcements this spring, including release of WordPerfect 7.0 and PerfectOffice 7, The movealso is expected to that occur because of their patients’ weakened immune systems, Furthermore, Kitahata noted that “there have been rapid changesin the standardofcare, so primary care physicians mustcontinually find new information as they acquire HIV-infected patients in their practices.” Kitahata presented herfindings Wednesday at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. others, quite rare, especially outside big cities. Many doctors havehad little or no experience withit. The new research shows that being a physician's first AIDS patient — or eventhe second orthird — is Novell treat. Patients mustbe tested regularly. And besides treating the primary viral infection, doctors must know how to handle a variety of unusualinfections In the HMO she studied, 125 family physicians scattered across the state provided AIDScare. Thirty-nine percent of the doctors saw just one AIDS patient during the 10-year period. Thestudy found that the men whoweretheir doctors’ first AIDS patients survived an average of 14 monthsafter finding they had the disease, compared with 26 months for those whosedoctorshadseenfive or more AIDSpatients. Kitahata also looked at what happenedas doctors acquired more AIDS patients. ‘We founda decreasing relative risk of mortality for each successive pa- tient,” she said. She found that those who went to more experienced doctors were more likely to be sent out to specialists. They also were moreaptto get anti-HIV medicines and to receive antibiotic treatment to ward off a form of pneumonia thatis a majorkiller of AIDSpatients. Kitahata said the HMO doctors had no financial incentives to withhold expensive careorreferrals to other physicians. bring stability to Novell, which has struggled for direction ever since it bought WordPerfect Corp. and the Quattro Pro spreadsheet in June 1994. Employees havetried to blend two different corporate cultures and marketing approaches. With the WordPerfect businesses now in the hands of another parent, Novell can concentrate again on its hallmark networking products, such as NetWare. “Everybody is going to be better off with this,” said Peter Genereaux, president and chief executive officer of the Utah Information Technologies Association, a trade group. “Novell has the opportunity now to focusits energy andits resources. It's fundamentally crucial that they get on with that.” Jeffrey H. Waxman, a Novell vice president, agreed his company will be strongerby focusing on networking. “This is the last piece of the new Novell strategy (being put] in place. By next week Novell is expected to announce a reorganization of its remaining operations. No- vell employs about 3,500 workers worldwide. Park Service: To Lobby or Not to Lobby? @ Continued from A-1 “There's a difference between fostering public debate over the wisdom of budget cuts andtelling a public gatheringthat you and all your friends should write their congressman and object to this bill,’ Watts told the superintendents. “Don't do that.” Underthecivil statute included by Congress in the pendingInterior appropriations bill, employees caught lobbying could have their agency budget reduced accordingly or be required to personally reimburse Uncle Sam for the use of governmenttime and materials consumed bytheillegal activity. A similar criminal provision banning the use of appropriated funds for influencing legislation is on the books, although the Department of Justice has never brought a prosecution since the law was enacted in 1919. Accordingto guidelines distributed by the solicitor’s office to park managers, agency employees may discuss legislative issues with public groups but only to ex- plain the legislation and provide factual information on the administration’s position. Park Service employees are banned from participating in any activity or campaign designed to generate support for or opposition against pendinglegislation. But many superintendents say the broad interpretation of the anti-lobbying statutes puts them at risk every time they open their mouths. “You may be giving a factual presentation, but we all know that these groupsthat ask us to speak, whetherit’s the local Chamberof Commerceorthe Sierra Club, are all built around a desire to bring action,” says Grand Canyon Na- tional Park Superintendent Robert Arnberger. “The first thing they ask is ‘Whodo wecall? Watts says Park Service officials merely shouldtell interested parties to decide for themselves whatto do and avoid any encouragement, real or implied, to contact lawmakers. “Tl be the first to concede to you the line is gray,” Watts told park managers, who must now explain the new rulesto their einpluyees. “You can continue to speak, but be real careful of the content and context of what you say. Better yet, wait until the legislation passes or gets defeated.” Passenger Jet Barely Misses Colliding With Errant Light Plane THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The pilot of a USAir jet landing at Charlotte Airport Wednesday was forced to drop below a small plane that blunderedintoits path, narrowly averting a collision less than 1,000 feetin the air. A computer warning system aboard the DC-9 warned of the dangeratthe last minute, andairtraffic controllerstold the pilot to make a sudden left turn and fly belowthe Cessna182, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The two planes came within 60 yardsof each other, the FAA said. “It was close,” said Christy Williams, an FAA spokeswoman in Atlanta. The Cessna’s pilot had been cleared for takeoff, but took off in the wrong direction, Williams said. Charlotte television station WCNCreported that morning fog may have caused the confusion. USAir Flight 365 from Washington,D.C., then landedsafely at 10 a.m. after the pilot circled around the airport and landed normally, said USAir spokesman John Branson. The Cessna is registered to June B. Kangas Co. andJeffrey P. Copeland Co. of Parker, Colo. Judge Has Doubts On BombingTrial In Oklahoma Town THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OKLAHOMA CITY — Citing “obvious deficiencies” in its tiny courthouse, a federal judge said Wednesday hehasserious doubts about holding the Oklahoma bombingtrial in Lawton, whereit had been scheduled. This week, U.S, District Judge Richard Matsch has been considering a request by defense attorneys to movethetrial out of Oklahoma. Thedefense claimsthatpretrial publicity will make it impossible for the defendants to get a fair trial; prosecutors wantthe trial to remain in the state so the survivors of bombing victims can attend. Lawton, a military town 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, was originally chosen as the trial site by U.S. District Judge WayneAlley But Alley was removed from the case becausehis courtroom in Oklahoma City was damagedin the blast and an appeals court said that the damage could have raised doubts about his impartiality. Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed it would cost at least $1 million to renovate the tiny federal courthouse there to handle the bombingtrial. “It's a waste of time to even talk about Lawton,” Matschsaid. It wasn't known whenthe judge would rule on the defense motion. 8 LB.
