As I've mentioned before, my wife and I are building a new home. During the process, we have spent considerable time andgreat effort trying to capture the best possible views of the surrounding mountains. But taking time to enjoy the beauty requires a constant awareness. It seems as though weareall constantly bombarded bystories and scenes of violence. We hear stories of crimes daily, and are constantly reminded of disappointing political representation. It seems difficult to find stories oftrue patriotism or reports of excellence. Recently, however, I was able to take part in apositive, uplifting experience On the evening of Jan. 10, I joined about one hundred Homebuilders and Associate members of the Homebuilders Association at the State Association's Inaugural, which was heldat the State Capitol. I was impressed and touched by the occasion and was pleased to enjoy the companyof friends andassociates in the building industry Twothings struck me as most impressive. Thefirst noteworthy impression was the magnificent physical surroundings of the State Capitol Wehadthe opportunityto sit in the chambers of the Houseof Representatives for the State of Utah. I have had previous opportunities to visit with representatives on the House Floor and in the caucus rooms and meeting rooms, but this was different Anyone whohas evertakenin the view fromthevisitor’s gallery can attest to the magnificent physical surroundings and craftsmanship foundin the building However, what impressed methis particular evening was that we werethere, not as sightseers, but as participants in a ceremonyof tremendous significance The Speakerof the Houseof Representatives, Ron Brown, acted as Official of the Inaugural, which addedextra prestige to the occasion. It was as though we were participating in something ofhistorical significance — and wewere Today, we, as Homebuilders, are contributing everybit as Union Park 567-4000 Salt Lake 467-9000 Orem 255-1500 Draper 571-7878 Ogden479-7979 WestJordan 569-8880 St. George 673-8282 Price 637-6559 Tooele 882-2100 Logan752-0111 Relocation 567-4300 Commercial 567-4500 “Mansellis a Real Estate Company that was born and raised in Utah,” Conventional wisdom suggests the quickest route from Salt Lake City to Moab runs south onInterstate 15 east on U.S. Highway6, and south again on U.S. Highway 191 If you leave early enough in the much to the fabric of Utah culture as did the pioneers who proceededus. It was an addedtouch to see the flags and bunting that bedeckedthe halls, columns, and balconies of the Capitol building during Utah's centennial year. Thesight excited my feelings of patriotism The second memorable impression came from witnessing the leadership displayed by ourvolunteer president-elect, Eugene Peterson, and our past president Dan Lofgren. It was the inauguration of Peterson that brought us to the Capitol As alist of accomplishments for 1995 was outlined and credited to the 32 volunteer board members, it was clear Lofgren led these builders and associates with great vision and understanding The Homebuilders of Utah havea long tradition of accomplishments in the state. From the first log homesto the user-friendly houses of today, men and womenof the home-building industry have contributed to our welfare The Homebuilders of Utah are presently recreating the Centennial Houseat PioneerTrails State Park as an additional contribution to the state's heritage. Just like the Capitol building is a token and reminderoftheskilled builders of the past. so too were the accomplishments of the Ho. mebuilders Association this past year Peterson keynoted the inaugural ceremonywith an impressive list of optimistic opportunities that are at our door as weenter the second century of statehood Hesaid that lowinterest rates. major economic development, moderate lumberprices, and a favorablepolitical climate are among the manypositive opportunities that exist before us Peterson brings with him the patriotism, volunteerism and excellence that I described earlier in this column, andhas the necessaryvision to leadus into the next centuryof statehood afternoon you can get there in time to see the sun splash against the brilliant redrock canyons, arches and bluffs before disappearingbe yondthe horizon.
