Show eS The Salt Lake Tribune RELIGION Saturday, Januar A. JAMES RUDIN Christians Can No Longer Let Arafat Tell Lie About 15 years ago the Palestine Liberation Organization leader, Yasser Arafat, began a propaganda campaign by de- scribing Jesus as “a Palestinian At first. I thought he was kidSurely, I naively bed. no one would swallow afat’s utter nonsense of rheforically claiming Jesus for posthumous PLO membership But I was wrong. This distortion of history became an effective weapon in Arafat's conflict with Israel AndwhenIsrael turned over Bethlehem to the Palestinian Authority last Christmas, Ara- fat. a Muslim, proudly proclaimed: “This is the birthplaceof our Lord the Messiah the Palestinian.” Unfortunately, the international media happily bought into Arafat's carefully calculated Big Lie. But sadly, there have been almost no Christian protests about Arafat's continuing claim that Jesus was ‘a Palestinian.’ Do Christian leaders care that Jesus has been cyni- cally hijackedfor a narrow po- litical purpose? Where is memory? Have Christians forgotten the New Methodist Preacher Asks Denomination To ‘Heal’ Massacre By PeggyFletcher Stack THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Before dawn on Noy. 29, 1864 a regimentof the Colorado Cavala — led by a United Methodist lay preacher — attacked a Cheyenne Indian village. killing and mutilating more than 200 men womenand children. Nowa United Methodist minister is asking the denomination to heal the past in a ceremonyof re onciliation at the upcoming quadrennial conference this spring in Denver. The group became known as “the Bloody Third.” Chivington was heardto say be- fore the massacre, “I want you to kill andscalpall, big andlittle.” A subordinate later described Chiyington as “a fiend incarnate.” Though many Coloradocitizens were outraged, Chivington not only “received commendations for this crime against the Cheyenne people, but was honored at his death in October 1894 as a hero and pioneer that both Colo. radoans and Methodists looked up to,” the resolution says. Chivington held various pastor appointments for the denomination and is buried at a cemetery in downtownDenver, minutes away from where the 1996 General Conference of the United Methodist Church will be held from April 16 through 26. Although Chivington was ‘com- missioned as an officer of war,” Deer's resolution says, he was commissioned by the church as anofficer to bring peace and reconciliationto all of God’s people.” Theresolution urges the Gener- al Conference to “extend to all Cheyennes and Arapahos a hand of reconciliation, andask forgiveness ‘andto hold a “healing service of reconciliation’ to acknowledgethat “racism is a sin, but also to see eachother as whole people whoneed each other as we acknowledge that we also need God.” ish people from the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through David to Jesus?
