I know what I'm best at. I'm just going to go backout anddoit and not care what anybodysays.” Before images pop into your head of the portlysinger sailing downthebasketball court, tongue hanging out, ready to make the hammerdunk, considerthe similarities in their careers. Both left at the top of their game and now both arebackatit again. In Cross’ case, the decision to leave came quickly. Butonly after he won five Grammy Awards for his first album (including the much maligned New Artist Award) and an Oscarfor the moyie theme from “Arthur.” “T wasn’t enjoying what I was doing,” he said. “I was touring on one aloum. I had barely enough original musicto fill one set. Yet I had sold over six million albums and it was expected of me.” Following up that Promethean success proved next to impossible. Creative differences with his record company compoundedhis frustration. He finished out his record deal and headed for the racetrack where he immersed himself in auto racing. He moved out of Los Angeles, “the glam capital of the world” and now lives in Santa Barbara with his wife and two children. It wasn't all bad, he said.
