The women’s friends and formerteachers are struggling to understand. “Every so often we havea student whotouchesourlives in one way or another, and Trang was one,” said Jim McCarthy, director of Upward Bound. her familyto goto college. Maura McMillin taught honors English to Tadesse at the prestigious International Community School in Addis Ababa. Shesaid by telephone from Ethiopia that the young woman was an Astudent, well-mannered and somewhat reserved, and committed to returning to her homeland once she became a doctor. Tadesse had been homeonly once in three years, McMillin said, and she spent her summers with an auntin the Boston suburb of Brookline. Authorities speculated Tadesse Ho qualified for the college-preparatory program because she came from a poor family and was the first in grewespecially close to Ho and might have been distraught because Ho wanted to live with someone else their senior year. Thao Nguyen, a friend of Ho's, said that the roommates had not spoken in weeksand that Ho had spent muchofhertimein thelibrary, not in her room On Tuesday, authorities continued to examine an unsigned note that was sent to The Harvard Crimson, the student paper, along with a photo of Tadesse. “Keep this picture,” the note read. “There will soon be a very juicy story involving the person in this picture. Police said that Tadesse, who like Ho was a 20-year-old junior, attacked Ho about 8 a.m. Sunday, stabbing her 45 times as she slept in the suite they shared at Dunster House, a dormitory on the banks of the Charles River. Thao Nguyen, a friend visiting to help Ho move, said she awoke and found Tadesseflailing at Ho. Nguyen was severely cut on an arm and leg but escaped. Ho's sister, Thao Ho. a student at Tufts University, said the family had fled communist repression in their homeland. Trang Ho English in makeshift classroomsin an Indonesian refugee camp, came to the United States and attended Boston Technical High School, where she was class valedictorian. She and Tadesse lived with about 350 students in the six-story brick dormitory. MeMillin, who came home to Cape Codfor the summers andoften spoke to Tadesse, said the Ethiopian girl never talked about her roommate Tadesse was the valedictorian of her class at the international school.
