Green (who worked with KKKIL The Bridges of Madison County Eastwood on “Unforgiven” and A Perfect World”) for giving ple, charming adaptation ofthe vel. By Sean P. Means THESALT LAKE TRIBUNE The Bridges of Madison County” is a tenderlyrealized romance that has everything that fans of Robert James Waller's novel loved, and fewof the things the book's manydetractors hated. Forthe handful of people unfamiliar with the mega-selling book. “The Bridgesof Madison County tells of Francesca Johnson, an Italian-born Iowa farm wife. One week, when her husband and kids go offto the Illinois State Fair for four days, Francesca encounters Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer shooting a photo essay on the region's covered bridges. Francesca (Meryl Streep) is fascinated by this Yeats-quoting globetrotter, who stirs passions she hasn'tfelt in years. Likewise, Robert (Clint Eastwood, who also directs) is touched by this downto-earth woman. A_ whirlwind courtship ensues, though both knowit must end when Francesea’s family returns. As director, Eastwood keeps things simple. True to the story, most of the romance occurs around Francesca's kitchen table Fluke is the sorttof children’s movie that adults will think kids should love. Don't bet on it — this plain objects, like that table, a warm glow. (The movie was filmed in Madison County. Iowa, which looks pretty and undoubtedlywill reapa tourist windfall from this.) The script, by Richard LaGravenese(“The Fisher King”), captures the book nearly scene-forscene, which will keep Waller's millions of fans happy. She evengets in a dig at Waller's book. In one scene, she shouts at Kincaid for closing off his heart. for not allowing himself to feel. When she shouts, “You hypocrite! You fraud!”’, it’s almost as if she is yelling at Wallerfor the shallowness and irresponsibility of his original story. Eastwoodis forced totalk a lot pooch named Rumbo. Kin- caid is the sort who natters on about what Iowa smells like (“rich, earthy, alive’) and jots played by Annie Corley and Victor Slezak, as they read Mom's will and journals.
