Show s Ghosts treats , fun; 3 Just a few more days to make plans for that old holiday, All Saints Day, or as we know it today, Halloween. Today, in most parts of the world that celebrate Halloween, it is no longer considered the heathen or pagan festival that it once was, but a time of fun and treats for the kids, mixed, unfortunately with a little mischief. Lets make this a safe and sane holiday for the children this year. Dig into the closet and find those old costumes. See which ones need repairing or replacing. According to the children, who are agreeing for once, they all need a new costume this year. I do hope youre handy at sewing. Costumes range from the macabre to humorous, to the ridiculously bizarre. Timmy wants to be a skeleton, but finally settled for being a ghost Mary Jane will be a witch. Sara says she wants to be an angel, or a bride, or a ! gypsy, or Johnny decided to be a clown, although he really had planned on being a piece of popcorn. Having decided who gets what costume this year, we can now proceed with our planning. First, lets check to see if the church or school is having a party. If not do we just let the kids go trick or treating? Maybe we should have our own party. At least we would know where the children are and what they are doing. Sound like fun? ... Invitations, treats, decorations, games and prizes. Have we forgotten anything? Oh my! I didnt know it would be so much work. I do hope its worth it. Finally, after a very long day for the kids, and too short a day for mother, the time arrives for the party, and so do the guests. Help! Another decision, who gets the prize for the best costume? Oh dear! Johnny just sat on Saras cupcake on the new overstuffed. What a mess, thank heavens for Scotchgard. Oh no! Not another disaster. You say Bobbie spilled the water when he was bobbing for apples? Somebody grab the mop. I or think they should have all gone trick treating right from the start. Hmm-m- ! Maybe its not too late. As the last child is bundled up and races out the door, you call out, Stay together kids. Watch for cars. Mary Jane, keep a close watch on your little brother. Dont go very far. With a deep sigh, you sink into a soft chair with a warm cup of cider to recover your faculties. Soon the children return all joyous with their newly acquired loot. Having inspected all the goodies to make sure they are safe for the children to eat, the party continues with lots of laughing and giggles as the children eat their treats and try to out-d- o one another with stories of ghosts, goblins and witches. After the guests have all gone home, little Johnny climbs up in your lap and says, with a hug, Gee, Mommy, it sure was fun. Can we do it again next year too? You know then that is has all been worthwhile. That is a mothers special reward. Have a Happy Halloween. This weeks special cook is Allene Roberts of Mt. Pleasant She and her husband Bill, and their five lively children came here from Falbrook, Calif, about a year ago. They also have an acquired daughter on a mission in Bolivia. Both Mr. and Mrs. Roberts enjoy doing genealogy and are active church workers. She teaches Sunday School and has worked in both the Relief Society and Primary organizations. She also was very active in the cub scout program for about eight years. She sews, quilts, cooks and especially enjoys her family. Allene has a very quiet charm about her, and is very easy to get acquainted with. She is planning some very special treats for the little ones who knock on her door this Halloween night. One of these recipes youll find in my column today, along with some of her families favorites, that would be ideal to fix for Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Adelaide) Thompsen of Spring City observed their 60th wedding anniversary on October 20.
