Show Pac Ten The Mt. Pleasant Pyramid October 31, 1974 Open letter Open letter Facts about Jake Garn Opinion against Land Use Act Proponents of the Utah Land Use Bill say this is planning bill only. NOT TRUE! Read Section 5, which has 20 Subsections of plans in fine print. Section 5, defines land as earth, water, air above below, or on the surface of, and includes any im- or structures customarily regared as such. Section 5, Subsection 1, incorporates all land and all natural resources in the state, which means everyones private property. Section 5, Subsection 1, Para (F) includes Metropolitan Government, Demonstration cities and Urban Renewal and creates Metro Regions both State and County. This also violates Article of 3, , ' the IV, Section United State 3. Environmental. mans property will are in vogue today, because Pumpkins and today is Halloween. You will find big ones and little ones and all in between sizes. Many will have funny faces and many others will have spooky faces to greet the Halloween Wenzel Shipper of Mt. Pleasant is shown here with some big ones he grew this Summer near his mother, Gladys Shippers home in Mt. Pleasant. The pumpkins were grown in the Old cattle corral on the west side of Mt. Pleasant and some of them weighed over 100 pounds each. Some of the biggest ones were given to the schools. No doubt about it, these pumpkins will make a lot of pumpkin pies. Wenzel has been working in the turkey plant in Moroni but is now employed in Spanish Fork. jack-o-lanter- s. The unelected commission under Section 5 will plan: 1. Esthetic condictions of your property. Does this mean shapes and colors? Do we as property owners no longer have the right to choose our own esthetic values? 2. Ecological. Does this mean we no longer have the right to landscape our own property as we please? Every be con- sidered as to environmental conditions. The environmental groups have already proven themselves too restrictive. If they gain control of each mans property, this will be total disaster. 4. Geological, hydrological, and physical values and conditions, in short, this means control of everything. Section B regulates the quantity of land to be used or for suitable agriculture, forestry, recreation, tourism, manufacturing industries, urban development, rural development adequate open space land, and will take into consideration future demands and social considerations. Proponets say: If we dont accept this State Bill, we will have a much worse Federal Bill. NOT TRUE! Read Section 5, Subsections 4&5. These sections tie us directly to the Federal Government. The appointed state commission will simply carry out federal offers. If we remove by referendum SB 23 The Utah State Land Use Act, we will not have to accept the lesser of two evils. Neither State nor Federal Land Use will have any jurisdiction over our property rights. Our rights will remain under local control as they do now. On February 21, 1974 Pd. Political Ad Writer against consolidation There is more to be lost than gained in the proposed consolidation of North and South School Sanpete Districts. I for one am against for a number of reasons. May I explain a few of them for you. 1. Education in the United States has always been with the idea of local and state control. In a small populated area as ours is at present, there would be dictation by those not involved locally in our communities. Over the large scattered area of Sanpete County, local knowledge of problems is necessary to represent us in local control of education. 2. This action will prove to be the first step towards consolidation of schools. This fact was given to the local boards m a meeting with the is Gov. Rampton told the Concerned Citizens Committee for the Protection of Property Rights that the Land Use Bill wont change anything from the way it is now. Why, then do we need such a bill? Section 8. The proponents of S.B. 23 say it will in 1977. NOT TRUE! Although Sec. 8 has a clause, Subsection 2 calls for 4 terms of the unelected commission to expire in 1975 and 5 terms in self-destru- 1978. Section 7, Para ( c ) provides for the permanent housing of the commission. Section 9 gives power to extend time limits. SB 23 violates the 5th, 7th, 9th, State Board of Education sometime ago when Dr. Walter Talbot met with other Sanpete Districts together. Elect Lawrence 3. SB 23 also violates the Constitution of the State of Utah in Article VI, Sec. 28 The it says: wherein legislature shall not delegate to any special commission, private corporation or association, any power to make, supervise or interfere with, any municipal improvement, money, property or effects, whether held in trust or other wise, to levy taxes, to select a capitol site or to perform any municipal function. The Federal Government is now in the process of tyring to proponent of SB 23 claim it was written in Utah. However, by some strange coincidence much of the wording is identical to that of Federal Bill HR 10294. Rep. Steiger, speaking in Washington about HR 10294 said: as ordered HR 10294, reported, still contains line after line of requirements, criteria, Has attended state and national educational clinics and workshops for 45 days during his service as a board member. Th Federal Land Use planning concept was stimulated by exactly the same people who pushed for the Environmental Protection Act, and who delayed construction of the Alaskan Pipeline for an unnecessary 4 years, and who have initiated most of the litigation that has delayed or cancelled plans for the development of new sources of energy. There are many great people who are now engaged in campaigns to elect good people who will oppose these comprehensive Federal and State Land use plans. Goodness knows we already have enough comprehensive plans on a city level, and on none wants environmentalists controlling each persons home and land. This would mean total disaster to the people of the State of Utah. and-Coun- ty Please vote toiioomi In a recent paper distributed to Sanpete voters, By Betty Bates provements Vote StangDut LARSEN Nov. 5 ( j Jake Gams opponent states Do you really think that the Mayor of Salt Lake will represent Sanpete interests better in the U.S. Senate than a native Southern Utahn? This seems to follow the tone of Mayor Gams opponents campaign to deceive the electorate and misquote the facts. Here are a few of the facts about Mayor Jake Garn. His is mother Fern Christensen from Fairview. She married Ed Garn who at the time was head engineer on the construction of Highway 89 from Thistle to Kanab. Jake was born at Richfield and spent many summers living at the Christ-nese- n family home in Fairview. Mayor Garn has been in Sanpete County six times this year. He has talked with many citizens in their own homes. He has visited most of the production businesses in the county, to name a few, Moroni n ber lll Vote fir tee Rfa Feed Co., L&M Trailer, Pacific Trail and Mayo Products. He has discussed many of their problems and he knows the struggle they are having with government controls such as OSHA. He has visited with farmers and ranchers and knows livestock production problems and he understands the right cost price squeeze they are confronted with. He understands the sheepmans problems and says Lets control the coyotes and continue to poison them until we find a more humane way to control them. Jake has seen the Mormon Miracle Pageant and has seen the transformation this brings to the county and has observed the traffic problems associated with REPUBLICAN it. Jake Garn is the only one among candidates and elected officials both State and Federal that has seen the mud slide in Manti Canyon and knows of Manti Citys water problems first hand. So I ask, who among the candidates really knows Sanpete problems and will represent our interests in the Congress of the United States? Respectfully, Donald Olsen Manti of the state we have a higher precent of students who go on into higher education and special training for service to city, state and natioa There is a smaller drop out rate and desire to improve their capacity to render leadership and service in such fields as medicine, science, education, engineering and business. 6.
