Show Page Eight The Mtt. Pleasant Pyramid October 31, 1974 TO ALL THINKING, UNDECIDED OR INDEPENDENT VOTERS ; ; He is greatly concerned with what he believes are misrepresentations, distortions and apparent untruths on the part of Wayne Owens. The following is a copy of a letter written by a concerned parent to his two daughters one in Beauty School and one at Ricks Junior College in Idaho. V Dear Robin You & Rosalyn: have been kind to ask for my fatherly advice concerning for whom you should vote. Robin, this is first. your second time and, Roz, it is your example of a candidate who I believe is not entirely truthful is Wayne Owens! Owens has said repeatedly he is not obligated to any "Special Interest Group." Yet in his 1972 campaign he accepted $29,000 directly from Labor Unions. (Out of a total of $80,000 spent.) The Unions rate Congressmen on how they vote for union backed proposals and they rated Owens os 100 for Labor Unions. Was Owens obligated? You decide! AFL-CI- have been a Democrat for most of my adult life. I My father, your grandfather, was a labor union organizer before was born and have always had I was once a union member lobor for the movement. myself. However, I believe big great sympathy labor now has too much power ond is seeking too much more. As you know, John Birch Society. believe we should generally support Conservative candidates of either party upright, qualified men. I believe this is best for Utah and best for the country. I First, may I urge you to treasure your precious right to vote,, and use it! Second, try your best to Study the issues and pay some attention to the various candidates so you can choose between them. Usually they will tell the truth and you can reasonably depend upon this. However, once in a while a candidate will try to "sell" himself to the voters as something he is not. Or he may try to dishonestly attack his opponent on half truths, distortions, emotional side issues, etc. These are the candidates to watch out for. Such an An believes in the strict return to "the Constitution." They believe in low taxes, less government power, very few government social programs, etc. These include the American Party and I if they are honest, There is often not a whole lot to choose between candidates of the two major parties, especially in Utah, os most Democrats as well os Republicans ore honest ond outstanding men and are reasonably conservative in their approach. As examples, Governor Rompton, a Democrat, is, I believe a true conservative and is and has been an excellent Governor. Senator Moss is quite liberal but has done a this year. Congressmen Gunn McKay is an honest and pretty good job. He is not up for slightly conservative Democrat for whom I have voted. Ron Inkley is an honest conservative. Steve Harmsen is an honest conservative but not in our district. However, Wayne Owens is neither truthful nor conservative, in my opinion. A few of the things he hos done or is doing are: Owens is trying fo run against his opponent on the Watergate issue, as you saw by the the Provo Daily Herald on October 2. This is not an honest issue to the voters of Utah. full page ad asked one of Wayne Owens assistants at a meeting three weeks ago how much Owens would get this time than from Lobor Unions in this campaign ond his answer was "a little less percentage-wis- e last time." This would put the lobor Unions Direct, Cash Contributions to Owens at least $40,000 for this campaign. In addition he is receiving a great deal of "volunteer" help! More important he has been publishing and making statements about his opponent that just aren't true and Wayne Owens knows they are not entirely true. These include statements Jake Garn's attendance at meetings is poor, using a meeting Garn isn't supposed to attend; and the Salt Lake City Budget has increased by too much, etc. The Salt Lake Budget now includes revenue sharing fund payments previously paid direct by Washington, etc. Owens is trying to run against big business and the Big Oil Companies on emotional issues. This is "a phony." This type of distorted and any candidate using it should not be elected. campaigning is called Please read the article in the October, 1974, Readers Digest, by William Shulz, titled "Labor Drives for a Congress." The top heading on this article says: The Sait Lake Tribune in an editorial on October 4 covered this, pretty obviously, Wayne Owens but failed to name Wayne Owens by name. "Union bosses are lavishly bankrolling "friendly" candidates in this fall's Congressional elections. If they win, uncontrolled federal spending may result." More inflation would follow. Wayne Owens is obviously one of the Union Bosses "Friendly" Candidates. Additional exact quotations from the Readers Digest Article ore: "Estimates are that the unions' total much of it unreported and taken from compulsory dues. "Never spending will exceed $50 million before has so much money been spent to secure control of Congress," says syndicated labor columnist Victor Riesel." Owens is trying to convince the voters of Utah that he is a "fiscal conservative." The truth is that the Americans for Constitutional Action (a conservative group) rates all congressmen from 0 to 100 percent as regards "for decentralization and against Bigger government. Owens rating is zero as low as you can get. On the other hand, the Americans for Democratic Action (a liberal group) rates Owens for liberal votes (0 to 100) as 76. This compares to their rating of Senator Edward Kennedy, a known and admitted liberal leader at 80. Yet Owens keeps saying he isn't I I Veto-Pro- of What do the leaders of organized labor want? Angered by Presidential vetoes that cut federal spending by $30.6 billion, labor demands a Congress that would override those vetoes and support its legislative agenda. Key planks in that Program: repeal of legislation under which statutes have been enacted in 19 states, greatly expanded funding for federal welfare programs, passage of laws giving public employees the right to strike." These programs surely If you agree, then please don't aren't what the majority of the voters in Utah want vote for Wayne Owens! "To divert their dues to the support of Democratic candidates and policies infringes upon their political rights," he says "It is not only unfair, it is unconstitutional " These figures are confirmed by the latest Utah poll which shows Union Members are 59 for Owens Incidentally, Union members make up only 13 of the work force in Utah. Perhaps I should give you my interpretation of certain items so that my meaning in the rest of this letter will be clear. is a man who will vote to preserve the best of what we have and yet not be afraid to vote for something new if it really mokes sense. Wayne Owens has worked as assistant in Washington, D.C. for Edward Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Frank Church of Idaho. All well know, recognized, admitted liberals. This in itself is not wrong! What is wrong is for Wayne Owens to now try to sell himself to the voters of Utah as a "Fiscal Conservative." He is just not telling the truth. recall, in the lost election home county, Garfield County. best, his neighbors and friends, the opposite. As I Congress, Wayne Owens pulled less than '3 of the votes in his believe it is significant that among those who know Wayne Owens voted against Wayne Owens. Anyone would expect at least for I two-thir- Wayne Owens were telling the truth and admitting he was a liberal, admitting he is supported by liberals, ond admitting his true colors, I would not be so concerned. In addition to Wayne Owens distortions, his supporters half-truth- s ond I am greatly concerned about how Owens' supporters at the recent Democratic Convention booed Governor Rampton their own Democratic Governor. This was because Governor Rampton is too conservative for them. Many of Owens' strongest supporters are They want forced busing, abortion, full amnesty for draft dodgers and deserters, greatly reduced national defense, more social programs, more government spending and therefore, more inflation. As a small business man I have received at least two elaborate advertisements from Wayne Owens saying he is for the small business man. Yet the U.S. Chamber of Commerce rates Owens as only 10 in favor of small business. in The National Association of Independent Businessmen rates Owens at only 27 favor of small business Again Wayne Owens apparently isn't telling the truth. You will remember "Some of the cost of labor's nationwide drive will be paid by the voluntary contributions of union members. But the great bulk will come from union treasuries, without approval of the Indeed, a survey conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation shows that four out of every five union members oppose the use of compulsory dues to campaign for political candidates He believes mud-slingin- g If Wayne Owens will spend almost Vz million dollars on his campaign for election to the Senate Where Eastern Liberals and Big Labor Unions. is the money coming from?
