The subject to which I refer is the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution of our United States which has already passed the U.S. Congress and is being submitted to individual state legislatures again this year for ratification. To date 21 states have ratified, and 38 are needed to qualify it as an amendment to the United State Constitution. Pennsylvania is one of the states which has ratified this amendment into their state constitution and it is already in effect in that state. In order for Representative Nielsen to serve the people in this area for their best interests he needs to hear from you on this matter and let him know how you feel about ERA. The more backing he receives enables him m im confidently assuring their audiences that the Equal Rights Amendment is limited to insuring women equality of opportunity in the areas of education, jobs, wages, and benefits for workers. But the Pennsylvania Superior Court decision gives the lie to this argument saying: Such a restrictive interpretation does not comport with either the plain meaning of the amendments words or its meaning as understood by the electorate which adapted it. ..The amendment specifically says that equality of rights under the law shall not be denied.. .because of., sex. No exception is made for rights in the area of domestic relations We therefore cannot judicially interpret the word wife as meamng spouse.. .We are thus compelled to hold Nos. 11 and 46 of the divorce law unconstitutional.
