Green Thumb project approved at local experimental Approval of funds for a Green Thumb Project at the Forest Service Great Basin Ex- perimental near Station Ephraim, Utah, was announced today by Mr. John Zupko, Director of the Utah Greem Thumb, Inc. This project will provide jobs and additional money for seven local retired men with rural backgrounds and low incomes, said Mr. Zupko. While the men will have an opportunity to benefit from useful work, they are also able to contribute to the beautification of a unique historical area, where the story of range and watershed conservation in the western United States began nearly sixty years ago, he said. Director Joseph Pechanec of the Intermountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, Ogden, expressed appreciation for the work that will be done by the Green Thumb Program in preparation for the 60th anniversary celebration of the Great Basin Experimental Station in 1972. He said that the men will be involved in beautifying experimental plots, constructing nature trails, establishing a small museum, and landscaping a roadway, while working on this important project, the Green Thumbers will acquire new skills in landscaping techniques, masonry, carpentry and other trades, while putting to use many of their old skills. Mr. Zupko explained that the Green Thumb Program, which now employs over 2,000 men in 14 states, is sponsored by the National Farmers Union and operates under a grant by the U. S. Department of Labor. Green TTiumbers must be at least 55 years old (average age is 69), and have a farming or rural background. The cooperating local agencies provide materials and oversee the project.
