Ambitious, manipulative politicians have their own motives; television journalists labor under pressures of time and higher ratings. Sometimes, when the interests of politics and TV collide, ethics and morals get battered. “The Absolute Truth” (8 p.m. Wednesday, on KUTVChannel 2) is about that kind ofsituation. Originally called “Spin” — title that would have given viewers a clue to the story- it is a fictional tale about politics and television journalism and howthey sometimes use one another. Jane Seymourplays Alison Reid, a producer for a popular television newsmagazine show, “Focus.” Her formercolleague, Jean, played by Linda Purl, is now spokeswoman for presidential candidate Emmett Hunter. She confides that she is being sexually harassed by Hunter and gives her producer-friend a tape of one of their unpleasant encounters. But Jean won't appear on camera, norwill she do anything about the harassment, because she wants to keep her job. Afterall, it may take her to the White House. It turns out that Jean is not the only one Hunter has sexually harassed. His victims include a Hispanic-American Vietnam War nurse who wonthe Purple Heart, a single mother who guards her privacy. Reid is finding the story difficult to confirm, the clock is ticking toward Election Day, and her bossis leaning on herto get the story ready for airing. William Devaneis Hunter, and Bruce Greenwood plays egotistical and ambitious reporter Jake Slaughter, whois not averse to resorting to ambush-style interviews norto beddinghis colleagues. In one scene, Reid and Slaughter are sprawled in bed, strategically covered by ruby-red sheets, talking about ethics and morals involved in reporting. However, as director James Keach, whois married to Seymour, pans the camera over his wife’s bare leg on the way to a close-up, distracted viewers are unlikely to payattention to their conversation. Their affair may seem consensual, but Seymoursaid it becomes a matter of betrayal whenSlaughtertries toelicit information from her and thus becomes another form ofsexual harassment. Still, it’s Seymour's character who, though frustrated, continues trying to pin downthefacts before the story goes on the air. “It’s extremely important that truth and veracity are more important than speed, in terms of journalism,” said the film’s executive producer FrederickS. Pierce, who waspresident of ABCin the 1970s. “Today when you haveall these additional magazinesthat are on theair some of them are onfive times a week — I’m surea lot of things potentially fall between the cracks. When everybody’s reporting against the clock, I think accuracy sometimes suffers.” Asit turns out, not everybody “WhatI find of equal interest’ is how sometimes personal *,s ambition outweighs any ethi standards or moral code. I think: Linda Purl pulled that off very ; well. And I think William Devane enjoyedhisrole a tot.” Seymour, who once interviewed Sarah Ferguson and» Prince Philip for “Good Morning America,” said that she has spent someresearch time in network~ newsrooms. a4 “The day I was working,it wasall about the story atany | cost, a story that would sell, not , just the news,” she said. As in the movie, the producer “had folders on very meaningful ..' pieces, the pieces she wanted to: do, and then there were the _ |} pieces she wastold to do.” Seymourconcluded that viewersof television news programs“shouldn’t assume a story is 100 percent accurate.” She questions whether “the ~ “ medium is so hungry that they 4 create the news.’ 4s $1,99 DENTAL BRACES FOR liance feer] adultéy and kids ee thatie s problem major We've solved the ‘ia from getting the smile of their dreams. @ Free Consultation @ No Interest © Appointments after school @ Affordable Prices 272-4451 ® ® © © Holladay Sandy West Valley Ogden ® Provo 1-800-411-4451 Up Quality Care for 25 Years Director: Richard Randle DDS, MS Member American Assoc. of Orthodontists HBO Movie “Chameleon” —_— 2:30 — (11) Trailside: Make Your & w Frontlinet(CC) | Love Lucy é ay Jones ‘PG’ Own Adventure (13) | Love Lucy AMC Batman and Robin. Is tipping a requirement to guarantee the safety of a child flying alone, or do the airlines still provide personal attention for children without handing gratuities to the flight staff? ~ Grandmother Judith, Lawton, Okla. DEAR JUDITH: Your friend DEAR ABBY Abigail Van Buren Universal Press Syndicate was misinformed. I checked with three majorairlines, and all three had similar policies regarding children traveling alone. None of them allowsflight attendants to accept tips. In order to fly alone, a child must be at least 5 years old. There is an additional fee for an unaccompanied child, but it is part of the cost of the ticket. However, fees vary, depending on the airline and the numberof connecting flights. DEAR ABBY: To “Concerned Daughter,” whose elderly mother is taking medication she got from several doctors and trading pills with friends, I say: Go to Mom’s house, collect her pill bottles, write down the names and phone numbers and contents of each. Make a list of medications Mom swaps with her pals. Call all the doctors and tell them exactly what Mom is taking and whois prescribing what. Ask specific questions and ask each if he (or she) is aware that Mom is seeing Doctors So-and-So. Then mail each doctor a note giving the names ofall her physicians and SEEK would like to thank our 1996-97 Partners In Learning.
