| Show prohibition PROBLEMS just twenty six days from today the voters of brigham Brigl iain city ind and all the other incorporated cities and towns of the county will be required to show by their ballot whether or not they desire tho the saloon to remain a licensed institution in the community right now much argument is being printed in the daily papers for and against prohibition and the campaign la Is waxing warmer and warmer in salt lake and ogden the real fight is on for far there seems to b be a determined effort on the part of both sides to carry the election in those cities the drys are carr carrying Sing on an active cam paia which includes street meetings every evening at which addresses are made by such men of 0 prominence as nephi L morris D B F grant bishop dieber iversen and some of the ministers of other while the wets are not holding many public gatherings they are scattering broadcast literature and painting the bill boards with statistics gathered from prohibition localities which dis credit very strongly that principle about eighty prominent businessmen of salt lake went so far one day last week as to permit or cause to be published a statement over their signatures that they were ere opposed to prohibition hibi tion and then gave reasons why that statement has been answered oy several bartles since then and the arguments nave have been taken up one by one and the other side gave its reasons why prohibition is a good thing I 1 I 1 in n I 1 last as t evenings news appeared another article alii t a in reply to the busl busi I 1 ness mens mena statement that from the statistics tati tie a which they gathered from prohibition cities and from cities where the open saloon prevailed which showed tb that it more arents for drunkenness n had 4 been mado made in cities where ethl prohibition I 1 atlon was waa in force than in the same given time in the cities where the saloon was tolerated the writer a bingham resident argues that the atel nent flan argument in favor of prohibition for the reason that where the saloon was wide open a drunken person would be permitted on the streets as much as he pleased if he did not molest anybody and consequently there would be few arrests which did not necessarily mean that there were few drunks but that drunkenness was the cause that led up lip to the majority of other crimes for which arrests were made on the other land hand where prohibition w was as in force drunkenness was a vlola oon t on of the statute and every drunk found on the street or anywhere else was 1 haled baled before the court the businessmen claim that prohibition would de moralize demoralize business the prohibitionist answers that with the charge that such buch a condition would be impossible unless the businessmen are arc in league with the saloons for it requires lust just as much food to feed the people eop e just us as much clothing to clothe them whether or not they get any liquor and then alio th 0 drys claim that every degenerate every profligate 9 ate thief tough and disreputable character ol of every description Is s always lined up on the side ot of the saloon and never stand for progress and the moral uplift of any but they traffic in those things which destroy the community and revel in the vice and filth that abat the saloon breeds and the businessmen who maintain that closing the saloon means demoralization to the commercial a rl i c ture of the community aro reminded ot of the company they are keeping by their dry brethren thus the campaign goes merrily on and as the time for election drawn near it will become more intense mothers wives and sisters are being appealed to for tho the curse of drink usually falls fall shea heaviest upon them and it if they all turn out of the ot of this month and vote tor for their own interests it would not require a prophet to io forecast the result in connection with all that Is being said and done by both sides kides the rumor is being spread that president joseph F smith of 0 the dominant church is not in sympathy with prohibition for tho the benefit of church members and others who might incline to the belief that he Is not the following signed statement taken from the improvement urn era of the current month should dispel all fears |
