If you are 40- or 50‘something and lived in the Intermountain Westin 1960, the answer you have been searching for all these years maybe in the ti that The Salt Lake Tribune retrieved from the ground on Arbor Day. Theretrieval was promptedbya phonecall. “When are you guys going to open up that time capsule?” -Dawn Coleman, a longtime Tribune reader, was calling to ask about the plans for a box of names,buried 40 years agoin a ce- ment and steel box at Mountain Dell Golf Course. She knew about the capsule because her husband, Richard,used to go up to Mountain Dell and help cut down the Tribune Christmastree each year. Besides, the namesofher two children were inthat box. ~ ‘The approximately5,000 names found in The Tribune's 1960 time capsule were compiled and retyped for posterity and inclusion on these pages by the following newsroom assistants: Julie Deae Amy Hodson, Joey MarScott Morgan, Sam Viochrlt and Bryer Wharton. to protect trees and to say what they hoped to be doing at the turn of the century. The coupons — about5,000 of them — were then buried in the steel box ina groveoftrees planted by The Tribune at Mountain Dell Golf Course. Tribune officials promised the box would be opened in the year 2000 and one lucky The winner, she said, would receiveascholarshiporatleast get to flip the switch on the Tribune Christmas tree. Never mind that most of the participants in there are nowclose to 50. A quick search. of newspaper archives revealed details of the contest that, quite frankly, had been forgotten in the year's since The Tribune scaled backits Arbor Day celebrations and planted a pinetree on Main Streetasits permanent holiday centerpiece. Young readers — or in manycases, their parents who entered for them — were asked to send in coupons reader would be presented with a checkfor $2,000. That led to another phonecall, this timeto the staff at Mountain Dell GolfCourse to see ifthey knew where the time capsulewas. “It’s there, under a big plate that says ‘Salt Lake Tribune Christmas Tree Grove. Do not open until 2000 A.D.,’ “ Mountain Dell supervisor Mark Ruff said. “T've been wondering when you guys were going to comegetthat ing.” An opening ceremony was hastily arranged for Arbor Day — April 28, 2000. The public was invited. A smattering of people showed up, including the Cole- mans, the Mountain Dell staff and several curious golfers who stopped by to see whatall the fuss overa block ofcementwas about. The cement was peeled away. Coleman raised the lid on the box and Tribune publisher Dominic Welch plucked the winning cou- pon from the musty contents. The winner, Michael John Murray of West Valley City, broughthis birth certificate bearing the same address as his win- ning coupon,into the Tribune office last Monday. He says he is putting the money away for his grandchildren, along with some current newspapers, so they can have a time capsule experience for themselves in 30 or 40 years. And he has been deluged with phonecalls from well-wishers ever since.
