Show worse, it is typically done before LAURIE WILSON his sprinklers comeonin the early morning. The paper becomes soaked and impossibly tedious to remove, even for the healthiest among us. Such a prank can only be the invention of a mean heart. Compare that mean heart with the kind hearts of two younggirls in my neighborhood who immediatelyset to workto clear the paper from this man's trees because, although not acquainted with my 1 like a good joke or harmless prank as muchas anybody, Tom, but I simply do not understandthe proliferation of “pranks” that can be considered nothing but plain mean. The “I Love You” computervirus struck this week, freezing up millions of computers throughout the United States. I do not understand what could possibly be considered funny about destroying for millions of people what they have worked. hours, days, weeks, months or years to develop and produce. Such a “prank” can only be the productof a disturbed mind and an incredibly mean heart. In fact, [havea friend whocalls such people exactly that, “meanhearts.” It’s an unfortunately all too appropriate description. Even more unfortunate, it is all too often accurate. What are we teachingourchildren — that they find humorandentertainmentin destruction andsuffering? Whatis “fun” about shooting out the windowsof businesses along the main street of Provo and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage, damage that could possibly result in an individual losing his or her business andlivelihood? Whatis entertaining about peo- neighbor, they recognized the unkindness of the prank. Kudos to parents who have taught those girls compassion and concern for fellow human beings. Lackofconsideration for others is many times simply lack of awareness of others. I choose to believe that most acts of unkindness are really acts of thoughtlessness; acts that people would alter orreverseif they were more aware of those around them. But only the meanest of hearts perpetrates harm for the purpose of entertainment. Tom,it is time we rose up as a community to condemn not only such actions but those who stand byand do (or say) nothingto pre- vent them. Laurie J. Wilson is Department ofCommunications Chair at BYU. As for whattakes place in our neighborhoods, look at the families these kids come from. Their parents are so consumed by their own lives they don’t take the timeto even know wholives under their roofs. Their children’s tives andactivities are oflittle interest to them. We haveevolved into a society that screams: “No matter what I do, it's not my fault.” Common sense and civility have been replaced by the attitude that our actingoutin this fashion is somebody else’s fault. I was abused, neglect- ed, misunderstood, unloved, ignored, given a raw deal — you nameit and you will find it as the excuse given by any of those who are caught doing these terrible things. Parents’ inability or laziness to instill values such as hard work, respect and self-worth in their children will result in the continuing increase in these kinds of acts. Today’s animal or property abuse surely will grow into the spouse, child abuser and criminal of tomorrow. These acts must be addressed immediately and harshly. Acts that disrupt business and government ability to function should be treated as international acts of terrorism, carrying the stiffest penalties possible. The punishmentmustserveas a deterrent to others who would dare to engagein this kindof activity. The good newsis there are so many more kind hearts than mean hearts, such as the youngsters who undo the damage others have done. It. gives us hope for the future. Ciao!
