Show ___TheSalt Lake Tribune UTAHSunday, November21, 1999 Jazz Charts Turn Pops Concert Into a Swinging Toe-Tapper BY JEFF MANOOKIAN SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE REVIEW There wasn't the sound of corks popping from champagne bottles (whence the term “pops” concerts originated — ny thinkit’s short for “popular”), it wasa bit of Bostonin Salt Lake as Keith Lockhart madehis Utah Symphony “pops” debut this weekend in AbravanelHall. (it's too bad the main floor seats in Utah’s principal concert venue can't be cleared out,asis done in Boston’s SymphonyHall, to set up cabaret tables for pa- trons to enjoy a few nibbles and a bit of the bubbly.) Judging from the sold-out house, it was obvious that the concert-goers were “In the Mood” for a trip down memory lane. Conductor, orchestra and soloists presented their enthusiastic crowd with an Americanjazz. The pops anthology of extravaganza fea- tured such old-time favorites as as encores, The Swing City Dance Troupe added choreographic effervescence. And vocalist Kelly Eisenhour added her unique jazz styl- ings to her fewselections.
