house in fact the silent reaper came without a moments warning touched mr steed and his spirit obeyed the summons without so much as a struggle in just an instant a strong vigorous man was changed to a corpse sir mr steed as all who were acquainted with him knew him to be was blessed with a rugged physique very seldom experienced sickness and that he would be called to pass so suddenly from life to death was a thought that never lound found place in his mind or the minds of his loved ones and fiends ri ends B ing the very picture of health the intimation even of such a thought was ridiculous and when the tidings came over the phone shortly after ten friday night last that henry L steed tad had suddenly died at ills his home a few miles west of corinne Corl he information shocked all who learned of it that night and the following day the news was on the lips of everybody about town ile he was in brigham until after six friday evening having baying come up irom from Ogden where he be had been in attendance at an operation upon his son clyde the day before and to those with whom he chatted he appeared as lively and full of sunshine as usual and in the enjoyment of 0 perfect health ile he had bad received a bite on one of his fingers a few days previous which pained him considerable and he mentioned the tact fact to several but that yas just an incident with the natural consequence and noth inato bo be alarmed over neither was bitof a cha character to cabie cause any ii serious erious results though after the sudden passing of mr steed it was reported that he died as a result of the cat bite super induced hydrophobia laj Invie lepof wo this rumor and the suddenness denness with which mr steed was called dr E C rich of ogden an old friend of mr steeds made a trip out to the farm saturday morning to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding his demise and ho be called at the news office on his way back and reported that mr steed had died from of 0 the brain when asked as to the possibility of the cat bite having anything to do with 14 it dr rich nich stated that it was impossible and stated further that a case of real hydrophobia had never been known to develop west of the mississippi river As stated mr steed had bad been to ogden with his son who was operated upon thursday afternoon for appen dc dwitis itis and remained over in the junction city until friday afternoon to see nee how his bis son got along after the operation ile he was enjoying perfect health but the sight of 0 the surgeon working on his boy caused him to feel a little sick at the stomach which prevented him from eating any supper thursday evening but on friday he was his usual self well and happy in the afternoon when he arrild in brigham his haslinger slinger hi ainger pained him con and he remarked upon the fact to several people with whom he talked ile he arrived home in the even evening and reported to several of the neighbors the condition of his bis son got his chores chorea done and told his bin wife he icat aielt like going to bed they were alone in tho the house bouse and while mr steed wait wa preparing to retire he be related to his hl affo wife into bed he be remarked now good it felt to get into a good bed and stretch out for a good rest for he had been under a strain tor for several days and night and was wan tired sirs mrs steed picked up a paper and sat down beside the bed to read a little she glanced at her husband huband who was lying with his eyes open apparently at the end of his nose noe and his shoulder was twitching a little all alone and she had to run for some distance to summon neighbors who gave every assistance and the sad tidings were phoned to relatives in this city undertaker jesse W hoopes was brhen out soon the home of mrs mary ann loveland gince the funeral will be hela belt I 1 tomorrow in the tabernacle at one henry 11 enry L steed was born at farmington july alth 1862 he grew to manhood in the city of his birth attending the district schools lind and later the ahe university of deseret now the U of U which was presided over at that time by dr john R park mr r steed graduated from the university and then went to provo where he took a theological coarse under dr karl G maeser returning home to be elected prosecuting attorney for davis county he taught in the public schools a number of years was county superintendent of schools and also taught in the church school at farmington with professors greenwood and frank miller mr steed removed to brigham city with his family in and became associated with the old hardware co taking over the stock of merchandise nhen th the firm dissolved partners partnership ip ile he erected a beautiful lionie home on east forest street and was setting getting along splendidly was appointed probate judge tor for box elder county to sue succeed judge E B kirk kiah in 1894 0 and two years later lie he was elected county attorney financial reverses camo came in and 1894 and mr steed lost his business as well as his beautiful home and moved with his family onto a farm a few miles west of corinne in 1895 since that time mr steed has been developing a splendid agricultural pro j jece cf ra and jid was wag eagerly looking lor or the time which was fast approaching when he be could move back to the city and enjoy the conveniences which his natural inclination longed for ile he was called to go to south soth africa la in on a mission to preside over the work in that far off land ile ho went accompanied by his wife and spent two years returning home last year ile he was wag enthused with hla his missionary work ork and could not converse long with anyone without getting ant onto his experiences perien ces s in the southland soth land ile he was appointed upon his return to preside over the branch where he r resided which is a part of the bear river ward and was laboring enthusiastically lastic ally in the promotion of tho the spiritual welfare of hla his neighbors he was married june IS 18 1884 to miss janle janie loveland daughter of the late C C loveland and wire wife mary ann loveland of this city two children were born to them clyde and lisle both of whom survive and aad both of whom are arc married the sympathy of the entire community goes out to mrs airs steed and her children in their bereavement nent because of the high esteem in which the family ii i is held throughout the county mr steed was universally loved tor for his cheery disposition and kind heart ile he was an aggressive worker a devoted husband and father and a faithful friend may the peace of beav heaven en attend those who have been so suddenly robbed of his companionship |
