Show supplement TO MARCH BULLE AULLE Z TIN STATE BOARD OF HEALTH it is instructive to no note to that during the month of 0 march the number of reported deaths from measles exceeded those from any other communicable disease including scarlet fever diphtheria and tuberculosis notwithstanding which the idea is still deeply fixed in the public mind that the malad is is too mild and trivial to deserve serious attention it is largely due to this falla fallacy that it is permitted to ca sp spread read an and become epidemic the fact act must be understood that measles is one of the most fatal dl diseases ases affecting young children causing more deaths among those under two years than any other contagious disease also serious aftereffects after effects such as ils ls pleurisy meningitis permanent impairment of hearing etc and the importance of observing more stringent measures tor for the restriction of the disease must be emphasized every case should be so cared for as to prevent it if possible exposure of other children and young children especially should be protected health officers should enforce strict compliance with the law notification of tho the disease and the P proper ro quarantine of cases more care should be taken to recognize measles in the early stage during which it is very contagious in this stage which exists for several days before the appearance pe arance of the rash the symptoms are similar to those of a catarrhal cold with congested eyes cough and fever all children having such symptoms should be treat d is as suspicious and at once isolated teachers should be watchful to detect the symptoms described and should send home on suspicion children exhibiting them quarantine measures should be based upon the fact that the disease Is communicable by contact with the person affected and not through a third person or things surrounding the patient it Is unnecessary therefore to quarantine other members of 0 the family except children who have not had measles these should be excluded from school and kept apart from other children because of their liability to contract the disease and to communicate it during the early stage preceding the rash of premises after measles is not necessary but it Is advisable to open the windows and doors to admit an abundance of fresh air and sunlight 27 |
