Show THERE WILL OI 01 L PEACHES perhaps not in the history of this community has such a severe trost frost visited it as that of last week and perhaps the community has never had such a miraculous escape as it has from the recent frost dy by this it must not be understood that the fruit was not damaged tor for such is not the case the frost simply raised cain but it did not kill all the fruit that most hard hit Is the cherries and apricots with the peaches in line with a good bump also but after witnessing the thermometer sail down to 16 do degrees above zero which was reported over on the fourth ward flat last thursday night and then see the good buds that can be found in any of the orchards in and around the city the sta statement that a miracle was wrought is justified A why it is that the entire crop of fruit was not completely destroyed is perhaps because the peach buds had not yet faily opened epand while th the e temperature went down beyond the danger point the covering en casing the tender buds was sufficient to turn the darts of jack frost and the life of the bud was saved cherries blossomed out either but those buds are ara more tender and yet there will be a good harvest ot of cherries of certain varieties there was such an abundance of bloom on the elberta peach trees that the orchards could well afford io to lose three fourths of the bloom and still have enough remaining to insure a good crop of fruit that is practically what happened and it if the peaches are a little shy in number this season they will ix be large in ineize size to make up for it heating was done etwas lt was demonstrated rated abat that the temperature could be successfully raised and aad held at least seven degrees mr C 11 davis was all alono in his immediate neigh Vr boyhood bo hood fighting the froot by beating all his orchard adjoins the wilson orchard over on the flat and he kept the tempera temperature in tho the center of the orchard or within the smudge zone up to 23 degrees while the thermo thermometer metor registered 16 degrees on the outside of the orchard mr air davis davia will harvest a splendid crop of peaches as will others over on the flat and elsewhere who have smudged the orchards that did not got get warmed up aro are surprisingly well supplied with good buds and feel much better than they did last week the cold wave came on so gradual and then it warmed up so gradual afterwards that it is thought the buds were in a way fortified before the coldest wave came and afterwards the cool atmosphere drew out the frost that Is conjectural however but the facts are all the buds were not killed for which brigham are very thankful there will be plenty of peaches tor for peach day and for all other purposes too unless some other disaster comes along and cleans out those which are arc left |
