Pleased with the success and critical reception of the arrangements, Duehlmeier and Gritton commissioned a con certo. We are always looking for new two-piano concertos,” said Gritton. Accepting the commission, Wolking embarked on his most ambitious composition project to date. “I wrote the concerto movement by movement over a twoyear process,”’ he said. “I would hand Susan and Bonnie a move- mentat a time andthe three of us would collaborate on each to where we wereall mutuallysatis- fied with the product.” “I tend to think of the harmonic and melodic elements of the con- a technically andstylistically difficult work. “Had I not worked with the Duehlineier/Gritton Duo previously and beenfamiliar with their abilities, I would have triedto get another duo for the performance.” Gritton said, “For Wolking being a nonpianist, the work lies well in the hand. Butthe rhythmic subtleties are the most difficult part of the composition. It's pretty jazzy forus, “With a jazz concerto,” Duehlmeier interjected, “you think you “musicians will have to be more adaptable to various performance styles to successfully maintain a musical career. Becoming aware of Wolking's new concerto, Tom McKinley, head of MMC Recordings, Boston, took interest in the work and sub- mitted it to the Polish-sponsored “Autumn Festival” — the biggest contemporary music festival in Europe — for the event’s American representation. “It will be a hit,” Wolking said. “I'm always optimistic about my works. However,it will be inter- esting to see how the Warsaw Philharmonic plays jazz, and if they can find a good rhythm section.” Wolking said the Utah Symphonyis seriously considering a per- formance ofhis new double-con- certo in an upcoming season. In addition, the Duehlmeier/Gritton Duo and Warsaw Philharmonic will record the concerto for the MMC Recordingslabel. ‘Tim Kelly/The Salt LakeTribune Pianists Bonnie Gritton, left, and Susan Duehlmeierwill accompany composer Henry Wolking to Poland, wherehis jazz concerto “Letting Midnight Out on Bail”will be performed. would have to be morestrict.
