Show The Salt Lake hc Van Halen pounds Salt Lake with Salt akr vTiibunr By Tom HcCarthey Tribune Staff Writer One of the reigning kingpins of heavy-meta- l rock, Van Halen, paid a visit to Salt Lake City 's Salt Palace Monday night And like their comrades of the metal music, persuasion, Van Halen played pranced around stage like inebriated gymnasts and whipped up the large crowd to a frenzy. Lead str.ger David Lee Roth was the focal point of the performance Preening and posturing like a bestial champion of autoeroticism in his silver tights, Roth growled through the microphone, the words tumbling out as from a rabid dog. Music g r T Marilyn Keek Claudia Weill defends film HOLLYWOOD Now that release of her Michael Douglas-Jil- l Clayburgh "It's My Turn" film is just weeks aw ay, director Claudia Weill is ready to admit that her style of working could have proven unnerving to some of her troupe. It proved unnerving enough, indeed, because reports filtered to me from the set indicate that both the film and Claudia were in trouble. That, she says, stemmed from the I never fact, '.made a secret that I didn't know all the answers. I like to encourage actors to try things their way. I consider it part of the creative process. I dont believe in being an authoritative figure, a traffic cop, even though I think actors would rather have someone strong ordering them around. But being that sort of a director is such a male thing." - She knows of other directors who Ihelm a rather loose ship, but makes the point, When a Coppola or a Kubrick, for instance, go on and on and on with shooting, it's considered a virtue and people talk glowingly of their creativity. They're too big to touch But with me, because I'm a woman whos only directed one other film ("Girlfriends"), it becomes a matter of She doesnt know what she's doing. " Claudia finds it fascinating that "no one wants to acknowledge how difficult it is to make a good film. They want to seem in control because their future jobs depend on it. And as a result most movies come out poorly sloppy or too long. Well, I don't care how people perceive me. I brought the film in on time and on budget. And I think I made a film that works. And within a few weeks, we'll have a chance to see what the public thinks. Michael Cimino has trimmed 105 minutes of footage out of "Heavens Gate. And, for heaven's sake, its still three and a half hours long. Dialaogue about the matter has been ongoing for months between the director and United Artists, which would like to see the epic western pared by yet another half hour by Nov. 21, the latest release date for what started out as an $1 and has ended up costing $30 million-plu- With his shoulder-lengtblond hair and piercing eyes, Roth looked like a crossbreed of Black Oak Arkansas Jim Dandy, Grand Funk Railroads Mark Famer and led Zeppelins Robert Plant However much he reminded one of those singers, his singing left much to be desired The lyrics were virtually indiscernible above the din of the Van Halen metal and his voice lacked range. The Van Halen brothers, Eddie on guitar and Alex on drums, were much more fun to watch. Alex pounded his double barreled drum set like a man possessed The relentness noise of Michael Anthony's bass tended to nuinb the brain, bnt thats what the groups purpose was in the first place. Eddie flashed up and down his guitar neck, displaying the technical prowess of a young Jeff Beck. Jimmy Page and Erie Clapton all rolled into one Unbridled Strength But as dazzbng and quick as Eddie was on his axe, his sound went nowhere. He accounted for the bulk of the Van Halen sound, performing with unbridled strength, stacking up lay ers of leviathan chords, then cutting them down with volley s of staccato fireworks. But the solos never said anything. He may have been voted Best Rock Guitarist of 1980 in Guitar Player magazine by its readers, but for my money he's all show and no substance Id take Beck. Page and Clapton anytime. Drawing from all three of their albums, Van h rihune. Wednesdav (h tober 1 rock heavy-met- al Halen," "Van Halen II" and "'Women And Children First," the bind played song after song dealing in easygoing sex and ceaseless, remorseless partying The youthful audience ate it up. howling for more, screannrg for the group to satisfy its insatiable appetite for heavy metal entrees For as much energy as the lead singer purported to put forth, he sure rested a lot You never see Towmshend or Daltrey taku g a blow Mick Jagger may be getting older, but he never ceases to amaze onstage And Robert Plant never lets up Roth loved r to use words, telling the crowd what a great time they were having, all the wlule sneaking a breath or two But that was the funny thing The crowd was having a great time. The howls of the crowd often rivaled the squalls of the band When Roth sang the opening verse of Van Halens current single. And TTie Cradle Will Rock," the crowd sang right along from start to finish, raising it to anthemhke status Second Encore The only time I was personally moved the whole night was on the bands second encore They played the Kinks "You Really Got Me" and it was good But never mind Heavy metal has remained the music of choice for most of Americas young rock partisans and Van Halen delivers The crowd at the Salt Palace Monday night was having a great time letting loose. So was Van Halen H 7 8. 1980 . The music may he vacuous but it does move a lot folks It is harmless, fun and loud As long as people are having fun, thats all that matters of GRAND OPENING THIS WEEK!!! four-lette- MANN 6 THEATRES PLAZA 1 MW "Wf -- " HERES WHERE WE ARE!...
