Show 6 II The Sail Lake Tribune. Wednesday tuber . 1isO 8 Best films of 30s . 40s Tliree movies made by people who care families in danger (if coming apart at the .earns They cant articulate their pain They can only try' to cope with it m their own peculiar ways Makeshift Family In Willie A Phil," which features Michael Onthean, Margot Kidder and Ray Sharkey, the family is makeshift and unconventional, a menage a trois thats being threatened by the middle-clas- s families surrounding it It's not that this unconventional family doesnt have its own problems Its biggest problem is defining exactly what it is If Willie, Phil and Jeannette love each other in the way they say they do, why do they have so many problems with their (unconventional) relationship Why cant things be more civilized than they are Why is the emotional weather so unstable? Willie Si Phil" is lighter than "Ordinary People" and "Santini, although its not a souffle It probes contemporary concerns, emotional concerns The film is an ambitious attempt to portray people trying to reconcile their emotions with their intellects. Its about three people trying to live together rationally Theyre trying to strain the irrational and emotional components out of their sex lives The attempt comes surprisingly and heroically close to working before it begins to collapse. When the tw o men get into a bitter fistfight over the woman they both love, it becomes a bid of a tragedy. It is not coincidental that each of these films was shot on location. Each removes us from the drearily familiar California setting of the Hollywood movie. In "Ordinary People, the characters are Midwesterners bland who have lost the ability to feel. In Willie Si Phil," they're ethnic New Yorkers who care about each other too much. Willie is Jewish, Phil is Italian and Jeannette, their roommate, is a southern Protestant. They like hair wear their shirts. They cant escape their bourgeois guilt. When Phil and Jeannette finally go to bed with each other, the one who feels best is Willie. Hes glad two people he likes so much love each other. As for Phil and Jeannette, they feel terrible. They feel unworthy of Willie. By Bruce McCabe Boston Globe Writer In the '60s, we were idealists BOSTON We worried about the group In the 70s, we were narcissists. The individual counted. Just taking care of job. yourself was a In the '80s, were going to try to draw on the best elements of both the 60s and the '70s. Were going to try to be as decent as we were in the 60s. But were also going to lie realistic We'll do what we can. Well work on our personal relationships. WeU full-tim- e humanize them, both our sexual and our family relationships. Well accept even limited accomplishments in this area. The accomplishment may be just adjusting to circumstances we cant change. We may find out nothing more profound than that there are no answers. These impressions are derived from a belief in movies as a barometer of change. Three new films, films which, in the aggregate, are cause for the celebration of what could be a seismic change in the sensibility of the American commercial film Real People These films indicate that, as infatuated as Hollywood can be with the bloated, the preposterous and the extravagant (The Blues Brothers, Xanadu"!, Caligula, it still knows how to produce a film with real people with real emotions. The films are Robert Redfords Paul Mazurskys Ordinary People. Qillie & Phil, and Lewis John Carlinos The Great Santini. Each film deals with a family, although Willie & Phil deals with several. In two and of the films, Ordinary People a sensitive teenaged boy Santini, (Timothy Hutton in People," Michael O'Keefe in Santini) is being emotionally sabotaged by a parent (Mary Tyler Moore in People," Robert Duvall in Santini). But the tortured parent-chilrelationship isn't the most significant aspect of either film. The films are superb cinematic desperation. They portraits of middle-clas- s show families in the kinds of crisis situations we can all recognize. Theyre and Station, Happening Today Dreams, Theatre, 8 pm. For their part, his wife and children try to love him, difficult as it is Although each film is flawed, in terms of their subjects, they are so illuminating that they have given me the frst hopeful feeling Ive had in years about the American movie. Ordinary People is the most scupulous of the three. Redford, a first-tim- e director, has taken meticulous pains with his problem drama. Ordinary People" is a study in compression, repression and oppression The family members in it are clenchedf fists, looking for a traget to strike. The title is literal. Despite their money, the family in Ordinary People" is as ordinary as any youd want to meet. Thats the family's problem. Its hsunted by what it preceives is an utter lack of distinction. Fortunately for the viewer, Ordinary People" is not an ordinary movie. It's a compelling film even at its most quiet moments, a gratifyingly deliberate film Theres not a moment of the kind of snap, crackle and pop the standard product is known for. In Ordinary People, you watch people striving to maintain their composure and dignity while their lives are falling apart. The films emotional power is intense The film proves that emotion is action. 1 600.7 50 940 HORSEMAN" "ElECTRIC exu ma timts STAR TREK" tPg) Shi 6 00,7 50 H 940 OPEN 5.-4A4bS1 901Ht4a MON In m Ul HttCajr 0tny COES BANANAS" WaN 'Him 15 800 THE BLACK 5 45 C) STALL'ON" 45.8 00. 10.00 G PROVO October 10th and 11th Timpview High School Tickets at Desert Boon.
