October 8, 1980 IlcniiiH the Menace By Air Hero Says He Did It For Fun Hunk KetcHam Radiation Rings U.S., Says Congressman By Naomi Kaufman Associated Press Writer SAN FRANCISCO The governments decision to dump thousands of barrels of radioactive waste into the sea off both coasts has formed a radioactive dumping ring around the United States, Rep. John Burton, told a congressional subcommittee Tuesday. Burton, first in a series of witnesses, criticized the governments failure to keep adequate records on the dumping, which began in 1946 and continued until the early 1970s. Various scientific groups are disputing the seriousness of the problem, he said, "and the federal agencies have added to the problem by not keeping complete records on the location and ingredients of the dumping. The largest dump is about 150 miles off the Delaware coast, but the site that has caused the most furor is near the Haiti Refugees Rescued, 30-fo- DALLAS (UPI) some who would 180-mi- There are argue that 1980 Neiman-Marcu- s His-an- d Hers Christmas gift is a bit extravagant and none too functional. There was no word on the refugees condition, but Coast Guard officials said they had no report of anyone being sick or injured. Officials said they had not determined whether the boat was bound for the United States. Some 15,000 to 25,000 Haitian refugees have traveled to South Florida in recent years. Many have come here in small, unseaworthy vessels. The Bahamian boats took over the rescue when the Haitians reached Isolated waters south of a spot called the Tongue of the Ocean on Tuesday. The crew of The Westwind, who found the Haitians in distress Monday, said the refugees had been at sea for 22 s. An aide to Sen. John Culver, like Haridn, a Birch Society target said the organizations will be investigated for possible violations of federal election laws that require any political committee that raises or spends $1,000 on federal races to file reports with the Federal Election Commission. No Such Reports? A search of records has turned up no such reports from the Birch groups. "These groups are operating illegally and from a position of hate and innuendo," said one Democratic campaign worker. "They have to be stopped. The advertisements in question are reprints from Review in the News," a society publication that has attacked Haridn and Culver, both of whom are opposed by conservative Republicans. a, Some environmentalists, led by Dr. Jackson Davis of the University of California at Santa Cruz, say radioac the names of any individuals or the hospital involved, although a spokesman said the report referred to two of the three psychiatrists at the hospital. One has left the hospital and the other is receiving treatment, the spokesman said. Further details cant be released, he said, because it would be a violation of the states confidentiality law, which protects the names of patients. If we released the names of the hospitals, it would be easy to find out who the persons (referred to in the report) were, the spokesman said. In other state mental hospitals, the report said, physicians "by and large have serious deficiencies related to the inability to communicate, poor health or mental illness. e The report, which focused largely on the salary issue, did not define the psychiatrists mental illnesses. But Nelson said there were no acute cases, and only a handful of the psychiatrists had emotional problems. Most state psychiatrist salaries in Pennsylvania range between $30,000 and $44,000, compared to $80,000 in Michigan and West Virginia and a in states near range of Pennsylvania, the report said. Not on Their Staffs Some of the hospital superintendents, who filled out the questionnaires that formed the basis of the report, told a reporter that the mentally ill psychiatrists were not on their staffs. We have no psychotic psychiatrists or mentally ill ones, said Dr. Harriet Mantell, assistant superintendent of Allentown State Hospital, about 50 miles north of Philadelphia. "We have no concern about the quality of our doctors. We have an extraordinarily high rate of cardiac problems among our doctors, but I have seen no mental problems, said Dr. Franklyn Clarke, superintendent of the Philadelphia State Hospital. "Im afraid that the (newspaper) readers will generalize that mental illness characterization to all state institutions, and I'm not certain you can do that, he said. Clarke questioned the statement that of one hospitals psychiatrists had mental problems. "Thats the assessment of one superintendent. There was no real testing, and they werent his patients. He had to have observed them just as a manager. he said. Some Language Problems Several superintendents conceded that they have hired foreign-borpsychiatrists, but they said they did not feel the language problem was a serious one. Officials of the Mental Health Association in Pennsylvania, which represents mental patients, said they were not aware of the specifics of the psychiatrists problems until they read newspaper reports. We want to get to the bottom of this report," said association Executive Director Robert Evans. six-pag- $50,000-$60,00- 0 it, Enters Food Chain According to Davis, the leaking barrels have created an intense, localized source of radiation that is getting into the food chain. On the Republican side, Mrs. Hawkins had 59 percent and her lead of nearly 40,000 votes over Frey continued to mount. In general, women need not stop using tampons, the obstetricians and gynecologists said in a statement However, it would be prudent, at present, to discontinue the use of the newly" developed, superabsorbent tampons, until more conclusive scientific research has been conducted in this area. To reduce the possible risk of tampon use even further, women are advised to alternate tampons with sanitary napkins or mini-padduring a given menstrual cycle. When tampons are used, they should be at changed frequently least every 64J hours to reduce the risk of poten- tial infection, the statement said. It added that any woman who is using tampons and experiences symptoms such as a high fever, vomiting, diarrhea or a sunburn-lik- e rash METRICS Examine Tampon The college said the recommendations are the result of the examination of the tampon and toxic shock syndrome situation by the committee on gynecologic practice and staff physicians. Blake said the death of Miss French, a high school junior, fits all the criteria; the signs, the symptoms, the fever all point to toxic shock syndrome. He said she was ad-- , mitted to the hospital at 2:15 p.m. last Thursday suffering with vomiting, diarrhea and a fever of 106 degrees. While the CDC continued to compile statistics on the disease that it linked to the use of recently developed superabsorbent tampons, Dr. Gary Swinger of the Ten-- , nessee health depart- s, - SYfe should immediately discontinue use of the tampons and consult her doctor. 1 11 fWXml - Wc SERVICE ALL sEicUonlc Calculator jjliy and Digital Watches 5 -- 25 3483 So.
