Show U.S. Anticipates Spread Of War in Persian Gulf By Jim Anderson United Press International State Department officials Tuesday warned Arab countries and the Soviet Union there is growing danger the Persian Gulf war may widen, threatening the flow of oil and risking the involvement of other countries. Secretary of State Edmund Muskie, asked by reporters if Jordans proffered support of Iraq could widen the war, said, Im concerned about that point. Jordan has given its signals two weeks ago and its obvious that Jordan feels the importance of its ties to Iraq. Muskie said he had met with Jordanian officials in New York during the U N. General Assembly expressing my concern about the risks of a widening war involving more countries. Use of U.S. Equipment The department has told Jordan and other countries their U.S.-mamilitary equipment cannot be used by a third country without specific American permission. Deputy Secretary of State Warren WASHINGTON Kennedy Given Bodyguards For Campaign Christopher told a conference of UPI editors and publishers m Cambridge, Mass: "The intensity and scope of the fighting has almost certainly exceeded the expectations of anyone involved. So once again we have seen how easy war is to start and how difficult to contain and conclude. He accused the Soviet Union of inflaming a dangerous situation by broadcasting "without the slightest foundation in fact . . .fabrications that the United States has taken a part in the conflict. U.S. to Defend Interests Christopher said the United States will defend (its) vital interests in the Persian Gulf region. While repeating that the United States is neutral and expects the Soviet Union to be the same, Christopher said U.S. neutrality does not mean American indifference. State Department spokesman John Trattner said the United States has been in touch with a number of countries, including Jordan, about our hope that the conflict not be widened. Trattner said the United States has information that "equipment, destined for Iraq, some of which may be militarily related, has been at Aqaba, a Jordanian port on the Red Sea. - Secret U.S. TV Host Allen Ludden AimcmY Bo'owTy AFTfef Tue tAuTIMV F 'DA MONTEREY, Calif. The officials said there is no sign Jordanian military forces are gearing up to join Iraq in the actual fighting. However, one diplomatic source said the Jordanian support has deep political meaning, since it risks spreading the confrontation, for the first time, beyond the borders of Iraq and Iran. William Quandt, a former national security MiddleEast specialist now with the Brookings Institution, told UPI he doubts Jordans actions will raise the conflict to the level of a Pan-Ara- b war against Iran.
