Show CUTTING- TIME OF ALFALFA. Investigations of the growing and seeding of alfalfa have been made ac the Utah Experiment Station for t H number of years. Probably one of B the most exhaustive experiments ev- B er undertaken by any of the Amcri- B can stations, is that undertaken by B 0lu wn station, some years ago on H the composition of early medium and late cut alfaJfa of the 'fust aiivi 'ecor.l crops. In each case, the alfalfa cut just before blooming was much richer rich-er in protein than that cut later, but a rather remarkable thing in this connection con-nection was the fact that neither the first nor second crop was as rich in protein as the third crop'. There is very litt'c 'difference In composition of the first and second crops of ai-falfa,. ai-falfa,. but the third (crop contains more protein and less fiber than cith cr of the other crops, thus indicating indicat-ing its superior feeding quality. Pound for pound, good Alfalfa proved prov-ed equal to timothy hay, while in the rate of gain proved better. A result of the experiments, frequently lost sight of by our farmers, was til-fact til-fact that in adding straw to the feeding feed-ing ration of luccrn, .the grain proved very advantageous. |
