Show priesthood MEETING the regular monthly meeting of the priesthood of the salt sail lake stake of zion convened in the assembly hall at 11 a in today to day saturday september 3 1887 president A M K cannon presiding there was ane usual good attendance all the wards of tile the stake were properly represented excepting the filth fifth ward of the city and the farmers and brighton wards the usual business having been dispatched BISHOP ISHMAEL PHILLIPS was called to address the meeting he had lately emerged from the penitent biary where he had bad been a tor for conscience sake he had spent many a six months in his life bore unpleasantly than his term in prison he had bad not lust lost his bie faith in the gospel and was not troubled in mind he had bad lost some hair and gained some flesh andio and so came out about abou t even he had made many acquaintances in the house on the hill and some were very good men the heartiest greetings ds tie rie had bad received since his release were from brethren who lad also been tu to the penitentiary for the sake of their religion it was a valuable experience and had heard brethren say they would woul d not take a thousand dollars for the education it had given thym them he was as staunch a mormon as ever tic he knew nothing if not mormonism nim 11 lie he had made no other calculation than that the saints would be troubled until satan was bound he did not know what was coming next and he did not dot care much he did not think he had bad been persecuted very much in his life he had been pelted belted with rocks and called bad names very often and had been to prison for his religion out that was very light persecution ne he considered he said the most moat important thing to think of was whether we valued the things of earth more than the things ot of heaven whether we were lovers of pleasure more mare than lovers of god the care and salvation of the young youn was to him a great question he M did not favor harsh measures where mild ones would woud answer in dealing with the youth he would not cut them off the Vie Church until ariti he be had use used devery every means to save an aad d redeem we can nut afford to make enemies where it is possible to make friends and retain them by righteous means there were six bishops in the penitentiary when he be was there they had had bad a rest and now they were out and add would have to go to work again tor for there was plenty to do he favored calling the young boys into the work early and training them to attend their duties while 5 buu top fop we need their help the treat ed he be had no complaints to make on that score his testimony was as strong as ever in the gospel he was walline not only to go to prison but to we die for it if necessary he exhorted all to be faithful and awake to the great responsibilities resting upon ahm m it mattered not what we passed through if we endured faithful to the end ELDER A W ft said he had bad also spent six months in a the penitentiary fo for r a cause he was not dot ashamed of he had bad peace of mind had obeyed the rules of the prison and spent tte time to the best possible advantage he greatly enjoyed reading the book of mormon and other good works during his confide ment and never was so interested in them thein before he sometimes shed tears when he be saw other brethren brought in as if resh fresh fish or when he be saw them depressed in spirits but he held did not weep for himself the holy ghost rested upon him and his heart was comforted let us feel for our brethren in prison send them little comforts com torta which ach they prize more for the good feeling they represent than for their actual value the families of those in prison should be looked after and fed and clothed and provided for he thanked the lord for his bis standing among his people whom be knew were the best people on the earth and he be hoped to have tran th according to ois nis day and be faitha faithful 1 in all ehg when brethren sympathized with the sufferings of others ile he asked the bishops to visit the families of those these who were in prison or on missions or lothe spirit world and instruct the teachers to do likewise and take especial care of such families the glorious work of god was rolling on not only those thosa who went to prison were heroic in their conduct cen duct those who re temptation and maintained their integrity in the midst of everyday trials and sustained the work of god and served him were doing just as much to rollon roll on the work to stand and meet the bullets of the assassin and fall as martyrs was noble and but that hat t ordeal though acute and severe was quickly over while with those plodded along the I 1 paths of duty resisting I 1 temptation and serving god in every
