Show BURNED TO DEATH the rhe fearful end of an old utah citizen in Mis missouri souA A Z correspondent of the herald gives fives particulars of the death by burning of james shanks aa old time resident of utah the sad affair took place at dry creek crawford county missouri on july the old gentleman was super superintending intending the construction of 1 residence for his son win D abanks a clerk on a steamboat line and a resident of st louis I 1 the house bouse was almost completed and mr shacks was preparing to leave in a day or two to inform hit hid son that the work on the building was finished about 3 on OH the morning of the the cook heard a roaring noise which he supposed was aa caused by a coming tornado an investigation however tio wever showed the house to be on fire tie he rushed up tip stairs and aroused the old gentleman and his grandson the three sta started arted down stairs together I 1 it is supposed that mr brauks forgot something and returned J for when the bottom of attic stairs was A reached he was not there it was too late to return u up p stairs then tor for the fireway fire was fiercely and unchecked A ladder was secured and placed against the bedroom window but just as the ascent was made the ceiling of mr mir fell three piercing screams were heard and then all was ended wm win shanks was notified of the occurrence and he hast hastened eDed to the scene of fhe he catastrophe A search revealed a few charred bones and these were gathered up and taken to st louis for interment by the side of his cifes remains james shanks was a native of paisley scotland and was one of the first to receive th the e go gospel pel in that land he emigrated to utah with his bis wife and family in 1855 he sailed across the sea in the samuel carling and arrived in salt lake city in october of 0 the same year with captain harpers Harper 8 company in 1856 he returned to st louis with his wife one son and aad a daughter leaving one son james bli blanks anks now of salt lake city and one daughter marian S Perry now of williard wilhard city in utah in 1866 his wife died he crossed the plains 16 times the last time in april last hebaus he was 79 years old ola on july lath of the present year and leaves two sons two daughters thirty one grandchildren and eight great grandchildren he waa a aj 4 straightforward honest man highly respected by all who knew him og off ft den lZ herald erald j |
