'It wasnt that our kith werent trying and it wasnt that Bingham wasnt a good football team but it was a game I felt for sure that we could have won, said Hancock. Its Coach Optimistically, Coach Hancock felt his Falcons could have went 4 and still made the playoffs. Those fedingi came in the beginning of the season. However Clearfield ended up 5 and still! made the playoffs. "Nobody really blew us away, said Hancock in reflecting back on the season, The reasons we lost a lot of games was the mistakes we made ourselves. 5-- 4-- Perhaps thats why the loss to was so frustrating, said Hancock, "It was so reminscent of the season. The 5 season was Hancocks second straight losing season in a coaching span. Bingham 4-- w the end of the world but its a bit frustrating. We knew the kids had to stay healthy and for the most part they did, except for Dean Vernon in the final game, our kids played healthy all season long. "That was frustrating too, to see a kid bust it all season long and have to sit the sidelines the final game. I kept noticing Dean the sideline against Bingham and you couldnt miss the tears that were on his face, said Hancock. Brent said he felt for a player like Vernon, who all season long had given 100 per cent. He felt Deans absence in the final game made a Mg difference in the final a game Offensive Line Clearfield overall started three juniors on defense and two on offense which will give Hancock a nucleus to build around next season. He is excited about several sophomores coming up in the ranks also. Eric Naylor, Kevin Porter, Dave Burke and Marvin Ellis. Mark Carter, and Shawn Moore will be back next season. Coach Hancock feds with a solid wdght program and the use of the new wdght room facility in the new gym, things can only get better for these young mm. The offensive line was anchored by Kevin Neville who played as a running back as a junior. Hancock couldnt find wards to describe Nevilles play in the offensive trenches and at one linebacker spot. Glen Simpson and Tim Robinett were two more seniors who starred for Hancock on offense. Robinett never played as a junior after coming off a knee Openshaw and Lewis Cain. Defensive Picture Tackles Eric Naylor and Kevin Porter were stalwarts on defense and will be bade again. Clearfield certainly was aided with the stragth at the defensive end positions where Ridler and Tracy played. The secondary was anchored by Gooch, Hicks, and move-i- n Mike Crawford. Jim Valentine also starred in that group. The Clearfield secondary had only three touchdowns scored on them, but Coach Hancock felt those three scores were crudal ones. Neville, Bybee and Vernon were super strong points for I dont see any reason why Tim shouldnt get a chance to play some college football, said Hancock. Vernon was adequate at the fullback position and was backed up by Scott Bybee who joyed a good season after missing his junior season. Greg Boar den had some great games and Greg had some bad games. Greg Ridler is what Coach Hancock called one of the most consdatious kids he has ever coached. Kevin Tracy is another who missed his junior season but came back to enjoy an impressive year at tight ad and defensive end. Brook Hicks was gaining maturity fast with each game late in the season. "As far as a defensive back, I dont think there ii a better one in the league, said Hancock, Brook is a definite college prospect as a defensive back. Others who helped con- a injury. Siawn Moore was put in a starter position on the offensive line and will be back next season. Mark Carter was converted to the offensive cater position and gained valuable experience with each play. Coach Hancock called Tim Gooch one of the leagues premier backs, up in the ranks of Hancocks defense Hancock respected Region One and felt the teams were competitive with most teams of their same caliber in the state . He also complimated his staff of John Flint, Bruce Craig Hansa, Keo Hides, and Ray Mdbos who he felt he worked more dosely with than ever before. But its for real, the trophy was presented to the Bonneville High studentbody last week by Coach 4-- A Blair Martineau and ty was BONNEVIlli'AS TOP cross country ocas stand with their coach after grabbing the in cross country. From left to right is Tom Hansellman, Craig Galloway, Coach Blair Martineau and Brent Sears. THREE OF state title i i . John McFarland really counted, Brent came his championship squad. I didnt expect the kids to do that well, admits Coach Martineau, I thought if we did our very best, wed take second. And that was if we ran our very bat. Bonneville was pretty sistat through most of the year, going undefeated in region duel meets and eventually staking claim to the Regia One championship at Weber State College. At the first of the season the Lakers had a different man finish fifth almost every meet. In the mat and in regia it dty-coun- . that finished tops for the Lakers. In state it was Dave Burnett who was the Laker's fifth man and finished in 36th place. Dave was the differace for us in state, said Martineau. Doug Kent, the sophomore took 16th in state which was impressive. Craig Galloway faltered in the regia mat and finished sixth in a courageous finish. Craig is gutty however, and probably ran his best race ever in the state mat and finished third for the Lakers. Tom Hassellman was Bane ville's most consistent runner. He finished ahead of Sky Views Hunter who was the Regia One champion a few weeks back. Tom claimed sixth place in state' after finishing 19th last season. Brent Sears, a junior, finished ninth in the state. Hes been up and down this season, but when it , through for us, said Blair. The Laker coach, who is in his first year as a cross country each there, said the kids make the cadi lode real good. They have a great traditia here at Bonneville. It all started with Neville Peter men. Most of these kids varsity have nn under him and they know how to be winners, said Martineau. The Lakers will be strag again next year with several top juniors and sophomores returning. Bonneville hasnt lost a regia duel mat in thra years which is impressive considering how Strag Weber and Clearfield were this season. a Galloway stated after the I went out there feeling like I had to make up for the regia mat. As far as the tarn goes, they were super. I didnt mat, think they would do that welt. Brent Sears said, "I didnt think I could make but it fals grat I made it. Tom Hasselman said, I a goal last yar and made it and this yar I did the same. The thing I liked most about this year's state mat was the way we e, at surprised everyone, including Orem who thought they were going to take it easily. .''em f Gi oiiti |
