CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP Loaguo Gamos bo playod In Wildcat Gym (All homo gamos thoso designated at tho Doo Evonts Cantor) oxcopt (L) WIN enjoy loffo Iron ffsreoUt3in52i in WEricsi ujtsffonmo by Keith Duncan In the big bad world of Big Sky football, two Weber State freshmen have certainly made their mark with bright futures in store. One is Roger Ruzek, the Wildcats talented (dace kicker who a couple weeks back busted a Weber State record for the longest field goal, a kick that covered some 51 yards. The other is Greg Kramer, the flesty freshman who has broken several Weber State kick off marks and will probably take care of them all before graduation day comes. For Ruzek, who comes from El Camino High in California, the Utah altitude has aided tremendously in his kicking game. I believe my kicking game has improved at least a hundred per cent, said Roger. In a school that wasnt primarily known for its football prowess, Ruzek jdid handle all the kicking duties along with quarterback and linebacker experience in high school. If his school honors are any indication to the amount of honors hell receive in his career at Weber, then look out Big Sky. Ruzek lettered nine times while at El Camino and that included football, baseball, and two years and all soccer. He had been he earned Later recognition from County. the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame. Riehlman Sets Him at Ease I can credit Coach (Pete) Riehlman for most of my success. It just seems that he has so much confidence in me, week after week. 1 remember back to the North Dakota game when I missed a field goal and we walked off the field disgusted. Coach told me not to worry about it but to think of the next time Id have a chance. In practice he gives helpful pointers about my foot placement and kickoffs. I feel calm here at Weber. Last Saturday in Pocatello, Ruzek missed a but feds hell be on target the next time he gets the chance. In practice recently he notched a pair of Films have no doubt been a big bonus for me,1 said in high school. The Ruzek who once booted a soccer style kicker says his first goal at Weber State was to bust the mark. Before booting his record fidd goal in the Northern Arizona game, he had a few chances against Montana State but that day the wind wasnt on his side. kicker have over a head-o- n What does a soccer-styl- e kicker? Its my opinion, said Ruzek, That soccer style kickers have an edge over the other method because hes getting more shoe into the kick. One Big Team Ruzek feds if the is ever broken there will have to be complete unity between himsdf, the holder and the center. Marie Massey is my holder and Tom Brothers was the center when I kicked the long one. One wrong technique on any of our parts and the kick is more likdy not to be good. 1 told both coach and Mark the day we played Northern Arizona, that I had a long one in me. I asked coach to give me a chance, said Roger. That chance came, Ruzek couldnt be happier about the boot. Ruzek fdt proud about his feat but claimed the in high school had to be the kick of his life. The long fidd goal came with three seconds left in the game and the three points allowed his team a victory. Ruzek is a soccer lover, a love which began in his youth playing in Bay Are leagues. But aside from the records and glamour of bdng a record-breakeRuzek felt be first became happy in a Wildcat uniform in the Montana State game. My whole life Ive always been involved in something on the field. I was wondering if Id made the right decision coming to Weber because all Id do was kick and sit the bench, kick and watch from the sidelines. I wanted to do something more. In Montana I played some wide receiver and that made all the difference. I got to knock somebody down. Even though we lost that game, 1 finally fdt like I was part of the team. As a kicker alone, I fdt like a nobody, said Ruzek. Ruzek doesnt blame anyone for Ms impatience, especially coaches who want to do all they can to protect the "golden foot. r, Greg Kramer This is the most consistent speciality team Ive played on, said Kramer, just a few weeks after busting Weber States record for most kickoff yardage in a single game, that of 127 yards. I admit I dont have all the speed some other backs have, but the blocking expertise of the guys out in front 0 6 (FO & 1 GREG KRAMER, freshman at Weber State, has not only broken kick-ofreturn records but is a strong canidate for the .Wildcat tailback f position. me becomes the big key. Then again I like readingl blocks and I guess Ive been a little lucky, he says. Kramer came to Weber State by way of Snohomish High in Washington, where football is big, big. The high school is located just thirty miles from nationally ranked Washingtoa At the beginning of the season Kramer played defense and was a little disappointed when he was moved from it. I love playing defense, but I also know that I could help the team more by playing where the coaches needed me, said Kramer. of . Kramer was coached by the respected Dick Armstrong and in his three years at the Washington high school, the team was highly ranked every year. Greg played on a state championship squad one year and was later selected to play in the state game. Before that he was honored as a first team We havent won that many games this year, said Kramer, But weve tried. I learned much more about myself and life itself since coming here. You learn a lot aU-St- ar all-Stat- when you lose. Kramer has two brothers who presently play football, one in high school and another semi-pr- o ball. Greg has his eyes set on seeing Weber State winning a Big Sky Championship someday and if his breaks some more records along the way, it wouldnt hurt his feelings, neither Ms coaches. Coach Riehlman first spotted Greg in high school as a junior and he never forgot the things he saw. Coach Chuck Detwiier was back the following year signing Greg to a letter of intent of play in Ogden. Kramer wont forget the happy times this season, like the time the Wildcats clawed up Northern Arizona. It was like wed won a national championsMp, he said. Gregs parents saw him play in Reno which was inspirational for the Wildcat freshman. He loves Ogden already and cant wait for the winter months and snow, skiing is a big hobby. |
