Show Sportstacular Pag 4 Thursday, November 8, 1979 jpurmenves It wont be classified as the classiest victory in Weber State football history, but the Wildcats arent complaining, it was only No. 2 this season. The 7 Wildcats were in danger of supplying the 7 Bengals with their first victory of the season but mounted a miraculous drive in the waning moments of the game to score a 0 victory over the Idaho State Bengals. Trailing by three points with just over five minutes left in the game, the Wildcats were playing defense deep in their own territory. The Bengals had put together a pretty fair drive and were using a controlled attack against a Weber defense that had been strong throughout the game. 0-- 14-1- Unless something were to happen in a hurry, the Wildcats were going to be in trouble. That "something did happen in the person of linebacker Mike Humiston, who jumped on his second fumble of the day, giving the ball back the Wildcats inconsistent offensive unit. Bill Tantillo had helped supply Webers first score but Coach Pete Riehlman opted to replace him with Bill Kelly, who had been almost completely ineffective in the first period So on came Kelly to try and pull out a miracle. A crucial penalty and a sack quickly moved the Cats m&ry mrei? where it was third down and a to their own long way to go for the first. And then, the adrenalin burst through in a flood. The Weber quarterback dropped back and looked like he was in trouble, but dropped a picture book screen pass off to Willie Glasper, who trotted 48 yards down the sideline, breaking tackles along the way. A face mask penalty tacked on 15 more yards and Weber found themselves with a first and 10 on the Idaho State 27. Kelly, who had paved his way to the sidelines earlier with an 3 record and two interceptions, made up for it' somewhat with the strike to Glasper. He then found Curt Miller over the middle for a short gainer which was aided with a penalty. There werent many Wildcat fans leaving the Minidome at that point, Weber now found themselves first and 10 on the ISU 12. Kelly had to scramble on the next play, and a Wildcats clipping violation moved the ball back to the 27, but Weber got the yardage back, as tight rad Dave Sebahar stretched mightly to pull in a pass. It looked as though Kelly had Miller in the end zone for what appeared to be his second touchdown grab of the day, but the ball was stripped from Millers hands and the pass was ruled incomplete. But "Big Bill isnt one to let up easy. He stepped 0-- - back again and just as three Bengal pass rushers dove for him, Kelly released a forward pass into the pay dirt area where freshman tight end Scott Zellmer had got free, long enough to make a spectacular stab. With Roger Ruzeks point after the Weber State squad had their second victory of the season. Once again as in so many games of past, the Wildcat Big D kept pace and kept Weber in the ball game. The Wildcats could only hold onto the ball three plays from scrimmage in the first quarter. The score could have been much worse, but the WSC defense held twice inside the line; and all that field goal the Bengals could do was to salvage a Case de by Bruijn. The Wildcats took the opening kickoff of the second half and four minutes later had their first touchdown of touchdown pass from Tantillo to the game on a d Miller, the longest play from scrimmage for Weber of any type this season. field goal attempt in the Ruzek missed a closing moments of the first half, but credited Weber with both of their extra points. The Wildcat defense, knowing that it couldnt give up another touchdown, was a little short of magnificent on the 4th quarter. The Bengals took over twice at mid-fieland both times were not only stopped but forced to cough up the pigskin to the Weber defense. rd d, Another cage season just around the comer tor Weber Its no kidding, Weber States women basketball is just around the corner.
