Show BEN "Peak- - Rattlesnakes continued from p. 1 around the top backside of Ben Lomond may never melt this year. But it can be crossed. WILLARD BASIN BEN LOMOND PEAK TRAIL; This hike is by far the shortest to Ben Lomond Peak. The problem is that the trailhead begins in Willard Basin. To reach Willard Basin, go past Brigham City on the way to Logan and turn off at Mantua. Take a dirt road going south past a new IJ)S Chapel in Mantua. This dirt road is quite narrow and rough in places. A car caq make it to Willard Basin (about a 12 mile drive), but a truck or four wheel vehicle is better. This route by car is very scenic, but as of the end of June, portions near the end of this road were still impassible since they were blocked by deep snow. This road will probably not be open until sometime in July. At Willard Basin (9,000 foot elevation) are three campgrounds. The trailhead is well marked and its about a three mile walk and a 1,712 foot climb to Ben Lomond Continued from last week Swimming In just about every world ocean except the Atlantic, poisionous sea snakes live. Water snakes, of course like water and Rattlers are not afraid of the water and are considered good swimmers. They can also climb trees and fences to some extent. Ecology Rattlers and other snakes are important checks on insect of and rodent populations. In Malaya, snakes kill all rats killed each year. a one-four- th Predators variety of other animals eat snakes. Mongoose kill venomous snakes and regular cats and King snakes do also. Pigs have sometimes been known to slurp down snakes like hawk, Wild and domestic turkeys spaghetti. The Red-taile- d will also kill Rattlers specifically. Cannibalism is rare among Rattlers. Naturally, a Rattlers worst enemy is man. People go out of their way to kill them and other snakes. In San Diego County alone, 10,000 snakes a year are run over by automobiles. Thus, up to six smillion snakes a year may be run over in the U.S.A. The Rattle Rattlers do not always rattle before they strike. After all, if y would starve while hunting. Whether or not it they rattles probably depends on the mood of the snake. A big Rattler who rattles in audible for 100 yards and can rattle p for several hours. A Rattler grows a new rattle each time it sheds its skin (which may be 4 times a year in young snakes. Thus, the number of rattles a snake has is no determiner of age. A rattle consists of some loosely attached homy segments that produce a sound like a rattle. They are brittle and break off easily. A snake rattles to bluff creatures to go away. At near freezing temperatures, they will die and above 105 degree ground temperatures, they go In really hot weather, they go underground and hunt by night. Hibernation Rattlers hibernate October or November to April or May. They go underground in dens or rodent holes. Their hibernation is more a period of inactivity than it is sleep. Americans write more than billion checks a year Habitat over 100 checks a person. Rattlers arent likely to live in a foothills yard of a house, though they may visit it. They will live under rocks, stumps and in the shade during the summer and hunt mostly by night. Fangs A Rattlers fangs work much like a hinged hypodermic needle. Although the phone (including the receiver) melted to the wall, it continued to ring! Everything all around us was ruined by fire, but the phone kept ringing. Its hard to listen to a phone that is ringing and not be able to answer it, commented Mrs. Heaton. Western Electric products will function in the worst of conditions. Each W. E. phone is given a auear life equivalent test to ensure durability in dialing and hanging up the phone. In addition, each set also goes through simulated transportation. This involves vibration and drop tests. The set is vibrated in three different positions for one hour each. It is also dropped on several different surfaces which simulate the damage a phone could be subjected to during transportation. In the temperature shock tests, the telephone is cooled to 40 degrees F and then taken to room temperature and tested for performance. The set is also put through an environmental aging process where it is cooled to -- one-thir- 40 degrees F and then heated to 145 degrees F at 95 percent humidity. This test is done over a period and is repeated for two weeks. The purpose of it is to detect anything in the phone that could be affected by extreme heat or cold. cessive amount of dirt or -- ur r Rattler Venom is so complex that even today it has basically defied chemical analysis. Venom Effects Venom serves to predigest a snakes food, like a meat tenderizer. In man, venom will break down cellular structure and can cause hemorrhaging and later gangrene. Venom can produce pain, swelling, nausea, a temperature increase, a weak pulse, lower blood pressure and difficulty in breathing and circulation. Death by snakebite is caused by heart failure or respiratory failure because of so much riddling through hemorrhaging. Amount of Venom Injected The Eastern Diamond back is perhaps the most deadly Rattler since it grows the largest and can thus inject more venom. They can inject 370 to 720 Mg. of venom. Under the right conditions, any Rattler can inject enough venom to kill an average adult. But, a snake usually calculates on the size of its prey; how much venom to inject into it. Since man is too large to eat, a Rattler usually panics and may either inject venom in super-larg- e d of bites on man; no quantities or in maybe venom at all.
